Stanley Nelson Jr.

Stanley Nelson Jr. is an American documentary filmmaker recognized for his narratives on the African American experience. Throughout his prolific career, Nelson has grown into a leading figure in documentary filmmaking, recognized for his ability to tell untold stories of social justice, civil rights, and cultural history. He frequently focuses on marginalized communities, with a particular emphasis on African American history and the influential figures that have shaped it.

Nelson's body of work includes notable documentaries such as "The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution" (2015), "Freedom Riders" (2010), and "The Murder of Emmett Till" (2003). His 2015 film "The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution" investigates the history and impact of the Black Panther Party, looking at both the challenges and the revolutionary principles that drove the movement. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was widely acclaimed for its meticulous research and engaging narrative. His other notable works like "Freedom Riders" and "The Murder of Emmett Till" have also been widely recognized for their comprehensive portrayal of African-American history.

Throughout his career, Nelson has been honored with numerous awards, including three Primetime Emmy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the News & Documentary Emmy Awards in 2016, and an Individual Peabody Award in 2015. He also received the National Humanities Medal, awarded by President Obama in 2013, and was recognized as a MacArthur Fellow in 2002. Nelson is the Executive Director and co-founder of Firelight Media, a nonprofit organization aimed at supporting emerging documentarians. He is also a co-founder of Firelight Films, a for-profit documentary production company. His recent works include "Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool" (2019) and "Attica" (2021). With ongoing efforts in educational outreach, he launched an HBCU tour with public media stations for "Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities". Through his work, Nelson continues to inspire conversations about race, inequality, and justice in America and has solidified his place as a prominent filmmaker of his time.
