Steven Eastaugh

Steven R. Eastaugh has been a pivotal figure in health economics and management, shaping the careers of over 4,100 healthcare managers and leaders both in the United States and internationally during his 38-year tenure as a professor at Cornell University and George Washington University. An expert in health economics and finance, he has also instructed at various Schools of Public Health, business schools, and medical schools. As an author, he has contributed significantly to the field with nine books and over 100 journal articles. His global impact is further highlighted by his health services research in 36 countries. From 2008 to 2010, he served as a health policy advisor to President Barack Obama, and later to Hillary Clinton in 2016-2017.

Dr. Eastaugh's commitment to healthcare improvements is evident through his numerous accolades, including the American College of Healthcare Executives Edgar Hayhow Award for “best healthcare article of the year” and the Marriott Award for productivity enhancement in the service sector. His advocacy for market-based health care reform and universal affordable health insurance, funded by reducing healthcare paperwork and administrative costs, underscores his dedication to systemic change. He has held the position of senior staff health economist at the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal Of Health Care Finance. Currently, Dr. Eastaugh operates as a consultant and speaker based in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Eastaugh’s research interests span a wide array of topics including health finance and economics, capital budgeting, and technology assessment. His contributions extend to working on four studies with the Institute of Medicine and he remains actively involved with several professional organizations such as the American Public Health Association and the American College of Healthcare Executives. Steven Eastaugh received his BA and MA from Harvard and a doctorate in public health from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, credentials that highlight his profound foundation in health policy and economics.
