Sunil Gupta

Sunil Gupta is the Edward W. Carter Professor of Business Administration and co-chair of the executive program on Driving Digital Strategy at Harvard Business School. He served as the Chair of the General Management Program from 2013-2019 and has also held the position of Head of the Marketing Unit at Harvard Business School from 2008-2013. From August 2019 to February 2020, he acted as a senior advisor to the CEO of Cleveland Clinic, assisting in designing the clinic's digital strategy.

Gupta's research primarily focuses on the impact of digital technology on consumer behavior and firm strategy. He explores how digital advances alter the competitive landscape, advising on how business leaders and entrepreneurs can adapt and innovate in these changing environments. His insights are detailed in his award-winning book "Managing Customers as Investments," which garnered the 2006 Berry-AMA book prize for the best book in marketing, and his more recent publication, “Driving Digital Strategy,” released by Harvard Business Review Press in August 2018.

Beyond his academic roles, Gupta advises and speaks globally to companies including American Express, IBM, Heineken, MasterCard, and Vodafone. He has published three books and over 120 articles, book chapters, cases, and notes. His scholarly work has received numerous accolades, such as the O’Dell Award and the Paul Green Award from the Journal of Marketing Research. For seven consecutive years (2016-2022), he has been invited by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to nominate a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Economics.

Gupta sits on the board of US Foods (U.S.) and Tamer Group (Saudi Arabia), and offers guidance to several startups. He is a recognized figure in business media, appearing on platforms like CBS, CNN, NPR, and BBC, and is frequently quoted in major publications such as Forbes and The New York Times.

Gupta's educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University.
