Tania Aebi

In May 1985, at the age of 18, Tania Aebi embarked on a solo sailing adventure that made her the first American woman and the youngest person at the time to sail alone around the world. She left from South Street Seaport in lower Manhattan and sailed 27,000 miles across various oceans and seas. During her voyage, she visited 23 countries, faced storms and calms, and overcame numerous challenges including mechanical breakdowns and personal loss. Her journey ended in November 1987, when she returned to New York City, having matured significantly through her experiences.

Aebi documented her extraordinary journey in the bestselling book "Maiden Voyage," which offers not only a detailed account of her nautical odyssey but also insights into the challenging childhood that preceded it. The book, praised for its engaging narrative, is in its eleventh trade paperback printing and has been translated into seven languages. It serves as a source of inspiration, revealing how she set a monumental goal and pursued it with unwavering determination.

Besides being a celebrated author, Aebi is an active member of the sailing community. She holds a BA and MFA, has earned her captain's license, and leads 10-day learn-to-sail flotillas in various countries. Aebi also contributes to a popular sailing magazine through her column and is currently working on another book. Her experiences are also shared through lectures, where she engages audiences worldwide with the story of her solo circumnavigation and the profound impact it has had on her life.
