Fusing traditional country with traditional rock & roll, the Mavericks became one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful groups of the early '90s. The group was formed when lead singer/songwriter Raul Malo met bassist Robert Reynolds in a Miami high school, where they both shared the same music interests. Reynolds persuaded his best friend, Paul Deakin, who had been a drummer in progressive rock bands before and had done some session work, to join the fledgling country band. Currently, the band lineup includes Eddie Perez and Jerry Dale McFadden.
Taking the name the Mavericks, the band began playing rock clubs around the Miami area and built up a solid local following. In the fall of 1990, the band released an eponymous independent album. The record worked its way onto play lists across Florida and made its way to Nashville, where it gained the attention of nearly every major record label. They were soon signed by MCA Nashville in May 1991.
The Mavericks' second major-label album, "What a Crying Shame" was a turning point for the band. Produced by Don Cook, the album was more streamlined and focused. It became a hit upon its release early in 1994, with the title track becoming a Top 40 hit. The album produced five singles and was certified platinum in the United States and double-platinum in Canada, marking a significant commercial success for the band. Their highest-peaking single on the American Billboard Hot Country Songs charts is "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down" which reached number 13.
Over the years, the Mavericks have released music under various labels including MCA Nashville, Mercury, Sanctuary, Valory, and their own label Mono Mundo which was founded in 2016. Their discography includes notable albums such as "Trampoline", "In Time", "Mono", "Brand New Day" , and "En Español". The band's music style, blending elements of country, Latin, and rock'n'roll, is notably defined by Raul Malo's singing voice.
The Mavericks have received multiple accolades, including Grammy Awards and Academy of Country Music Awards. They won the Country Music Association's Vocal Group of the Year award in both 1995 and 1996, and the Trailblazer Award at the 2021 Americana Music Honors & Awards. They have also made a number of impactful public appearances, such as performing at the Statler Ballroom in 2019 and in Fort Worth's Stockyards in 2024. The Mavericks celebrated their 30th anniversary with a tour in 2019 and announced a new album "Moon & Stars" and European tour dates in 2024.
