The O’Jays are an American R&B group best known for their soulful disco hits such as “Love Train,” “Back Stabbers,” and “Use ta Be My Girl.” The group was founded in 1958 and originally consisted of Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, William Powell, Bobby Massey and Bill Isles. Levert and Williams continue to be a part of the band along with Eric Grant.
The O’Jays were launched into success when Gamble & Huff, a team of producers and songwriters, signed them to their Philadelphia International label in 1972. Levert, Williams and Powell topped the Billboard Hot 100 the following year with their popular hit “Love Train.” The trio produced numerous other hits through the 1970s, 80s and 90s.
The O’Jays were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004 as well as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
