Tom Oxley

Dr. Thomas Oxley is a pioneering physician, neuroscientist, and entrepreneur known for his groundbreaking work in neurotechnology and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). He is the founder and CEO of Synchron, a medical device company developing minimally invasive neural interfaces to restore motor and sensory functions in individuals with severe paralysis. Synchron’s flagship product, the Stentrode, has gained significant attention as the first device of its kind to be implanted into the brain via blood vessels, eliminating the need for open brain surgery. This innovative approach has the potential to drastically change the treatment landscape for patients with neurological disabilities.

Additionally, Dr. Oxley is an instructor and Director of Innovation Strategy for the Department of Neurosurgery at the Mount Sinai Health System. As part of the Cerebrovascular Center, he specializes in vascular neurosurgery and interventional neurology, including the treatments of stroke, brain aneurysms, and vascular malformations. In his strategic role in Mount Sinai BioDesign, he assists faculty members in the development of novel devices and technologies.

Dr. Oxley earned his medical degree from the University of Melbourne in Australia and completed further training in neurology and interventional neurology. He also holds a PhD in neuroscience from the University of Melbourne, where he focused on brain-machine interfaces and stroke recovery. His clinical expertise and research in neural engineering have made him a recognized leader in both medical and scientific communities, and his work has been published in top journals like Nature Biotechnology and The Lancet.

Under Dr. Oxley’s leadership, Synchron has reached several key milestones, including successful human trials that demonstrated the safety and feasibility of the Stentrode.
