Tom Voss Biography
Tom Voss served in the U.S. Army from 2003 to 2006 as an infantry scout with the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, part of the 1st Brigade 25th Infantry Division, one of the Army's first Stryker Infantry Brigades. Deployed to Mosul, Iraq, in 2004, he participated in numerous combat missions, security patrols, and humanitarian operations, including the security for Iraq's first democratic elections post-invasion. He was honorably discharged in 2006.
After his service, Voss struggled with PTSD and was on the brink of suicide. In 2013, he and fellow veteran Anthony Anderson completed a 2,700-mile trek from Milwaukee to Los Angeles to aid their healing process. This journey was featured in the documentary "Almost Sunrise," which aired on PBS, was nominated for an Emmy, and was screened nationwide.
Voss co-authored "Where War Ends: A Combat Veteran’s 2,700-Mile Journey to Heal ― Recovering from PTSD and Moral Injury through Meditation," published in 2019. He has been featured in major publications like the New York Times and Newsweek. He has spoken about his journey at venues including Google, the Aspen Ideas Festival, NYU, The Harvard Club of New York City, and the U.S. Congress.
