Tony Brown

Tony Brown is the Chief Executive Officer of Urban America Television Network (UATV), which reaches approximately 30 million viewers. He has established himself as a media entrepreneur, producer, bestselling author, educator, radio host, television commentator, and film director. Brown's leadership in media and civil rights is evidenced by his coordination of a historic civil rights march led by Martin Luther King Jr., which drew an estimated 500,000 participants and where Dr. King first delivered his iconic "I Have A Dream" speech.

In 2002, Brown became the first recipient of the National Director’s Legacy Award for Journalism from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). Shortly thereafter, he was inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ prestigious Silver Circle, recognizing his enduring contributions to television alongside notable figures like Walter Cronkite.

As an influential academic figure, Brown was the first and founding dean of the School of Communications at Howard University and the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University. His works as an author include "What Mama Told Me," "Black Lies, White Lies: The Truth According To Tony Brown," and "Empower The People," the first of which details the core values imparted to him by his mother that have sustained his life.

Brown's advocacy and profound influence in journalism are further highlighted by his role as the commentator of the PBS series "Tony Brown’s Journal," the longest-running series on PBS. This series has been recognized as one of the top ten television shows presenting positive Black images and was nominated for the 1991 NAACP Image Award for “Outstanding News, Talk or Information Series/Special.” Furthermore, Brown's radio impact is marked by his selection by "Talkers" magazine as one of the "100 most important radio talk show hosts in America."

His dedication to education and economic empowerment has also been recognized with multiple awards, including the Ambassador of Free Enterprise Award and the 1995 Educator of the Year Award from the Sales and Marketing Executives International Academy of Achievement, as well as The Economic Empowerment Award from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Brown also serves as the honorary chairperson of the National Organization of Black College Alumni, Inc. and is a member of the Board of Trustees of The Shaw Divinity School among other notable boards, underscoring his ongoing commitment to education and community service. His visionary leadership continues to inspire and shape the discourse on civil rights, media representation, and economic empowerment.
