Ty Murray, an American former professional rodeo cowboy, is widely known for his achievements in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). His exceptional talent led him to win seven all-around and two bull-riding world championships. Murray's contributions to the rodeo world extended beyond his personal achievements as he was one of the co-founders and a board adviser of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR). His expertise found him a spot as a regular color commentator for several televised PBR events from 2005 to 2020. In 2023, Murray's contribution to the sport was recognized when he was ranked No. 11 on the list of the top 30 bull riders in PBR history.
Murray's professional journey is filled with significant milestones. He became the youngest all-around champion in 1989 and qualified for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, and almost in bull riding. Murray was the third cowboy in 17 years to qualify for all three roughstock events in the NFR. He was not just a participant but a winner at multiple rodeos, including Colorado Springs, Phoenix, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He was the first cowboy to win over $200,000 in rodeo earnings and rode the bull Achey Breaky for 81.5 points in the PBR World Finals.
Outside of the rodeo arena, Murray made his mark in the world of entertainment. He appeared in an episode of "Walker, Texas Ranger," was featured in the Miller Lite "Man Laws" series of commercials, and ventured into reality television with appearances in "Fast Cars and Superstars: The Gillette Young Guns Celebrity Race," "Ty Murray's Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge," and the eighth season of "Dancing with the Stars." His contributions to rodeo and his public presence led to his induction into multiple Halls of Fame, including the Rodeo Hall of Fame, ProRodeo Hall of Fame, and Bull Riding Hall of Fame. The PBR honored Murray by naming a new award after him, the Ty Murray Top Hand Award.
Murray currently resides on a 2,800-acre ranch with his wife, Paige, 13-year-old son, Kase, and 6-year-old daughter, Oakley. They run a cow/calf operation with black Angus cows and Charolais bulls. After he retired at the age of 32, he trained under Dennis Reis Natural Horsemanship. Along with Dennis Reis, he co-founded the National Day of the Horse, where December 13th is dedicated to honoring the horse. He has stated “I don’t want to be just be known as a great rodeo cowboy, I want to be known as a great cowboy.” His passion for horsemanship has led to part of his life’s purpose to make the world a better place for the horse.
