Vandana Shiva

Dr. Vandana Shiva earned her Ph.D. in physics from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, focusing her dissertation on "Hidden Variables and Non-locality in Quantum Theory." Transitioning from physics to interdisciplinary research, she has greatly influenced science, technology, and environmental policy through her work at the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore. In 1982, she founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology in Dehra Dun, an entity committed to high quality, independent research that collaborates closely with local communities and social movements. A decade later, she established Navdanya, a national movement aimed at protecting the diversity and integrity of living resources, advocating for organic farming and fair trade. In 2004, she initiated Bija Vidyapeeth, an international college for sustainable living in Doon Valley, in association with Schumacher College, U.K.

Shiva's activism is bolstered by her intellectual prowess. She is recognized as a leading environmental and feminist advocate, having been active in the conservation movement since the 1970s. Her advocacy extends to sustainable agriculture and opposition to genetic engineering, with a special focus on empowering women globally in agricultural practices. Shiva is also a prominent figure in the International Forum on Globalization, sharing leadership with figures like Ralph Nader and Jeremy Rifkin. Dr. Shiva is a prolific author, with significant works including "Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability, and Peace," "Manifestos on the Future of Food & Seed," "Staying Alive: Women, Ecology, and Development," and "Who Really Feeds the World." Her upcoming book "Oneness vs. The 1%" is eagerly anticipated. Among her numerous accolades are the Right Livelihood Award in 1993, the Global 500 Award from the United Nations Environment Programme, and the Earth Day International Award. Her academic contributions have been recognized with honorary doctorates from several prestigious universities, including the University of Paris and the University of Oslo. Shiva continues to serve as a beacon in the realm of environmental activism, inspiring policy changes and fostering a more sustainable and equitable global community.
