Weijian Shan

Weijian Shan is an economist, businessman and author based in Hong Kong. As the Executive Chairman, CEO and co-founder of PAG, one of Asia's leading investment firms, he has more than 25 years of experience in private equity investment in the Asia-Pacific region and founded PAG’s private equity business in 2010.

Prior to PAG, Shan was a Senior Partner the private equity firm TPG Capital. Before that, Shan worked at JP Morgan as a Managing Director, concurrently serving as its chief China representative. He was a professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania for six years and also worked as an investment officer at the World Bank as a member of its Young Professionals Program.

Shan is a Trustee of the British Museum. He is also a member of the International Advisory Council of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, and an independent director of Alibaba Group.

Shan published his memoir "Out of the Gobi: My Story of China and America" in 2019. The title of the book stems from Shan having spent six years as a farm laborer in the Gobi desert as the result of Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution. Subsequent books he has written are "Money Games: The Inside Story of How American Dealmakers Saved Korea's Most Iconic Bank" and "Money Machine – A Trailblazing American Venture in China." He has published commentaries in the likes of the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, The Economist and Foreign Affairs.

Shan received a Ph.D. and a Masters of Arts in economics from the University of California at Berkeley and an MBA from the University of San Francisco. He graduated with a major in English at Beijing University of International Business and Economics.
