Yu Darvish

Yu Darvish is a Japanese professional baseball pitcher who plays for the San Diego Padres. Recognized for his exceptional pitching abilities, Darvish has played in both Nippon Professional Baseball and Major League Baseball, for varied teams such as the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Chicago Cubs. His career in Major League Baseball began in 2012 with Texas Rangers, where he was named the AL Rookie of the Month in April and later announced as an All-Star.

Darvish's talent extends beyond national boundaries. He represented the Japanese national team in international competitions like the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2009 World Baseball Classic, later reprising this role in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. His impressive record comprises numerous accolades, including leading the MLB in strikeouts with 277 in 2013 and reaching the 500-strikeout mark in fewer innings pitched than any other starting pitcher in MLB history.

Despite experiencing a career setback in 2015 due to an injury to his right elbow, Darvish made a resilient comeback in 2016. Following his tenure with the Texas Rangers, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017 and later to the Chicago Cubs in 2018. In 2020, Darvish placed 2nd in the National League Cy Young vote in the pandemic-shortened season. His career took another leap forward when he signed a six-year, $108 million contract extension with the San Diego Padres in February 2023.
