Robert B. Swanson, II

Robert was formerly President of Digital Productions, the pioneering computer graphics film special effects company, which became famous for its 3D Cray Supercomputer-generated films, such as “The Last Starfighter”, “2010”, “Labyrinth”, and “The Ice Pirates.” Digital Productions produced ground-breaking advanced cgi effects, leading to the formation of the 3D cgi special effects industry today. Many of today’s top cgi F/X companies, such as ILM, Digital Domain, Sony, Boss Films, Rhythm and Hues, Angel Studios, and DreamQuest Images, contain top executives, creative artists, and managers who first cut their teeth at Digital Productions, working for and with Robert. His latest film project involvement is as Executive Producer of a feature film which was released in 2004.
Prior to Digital Productions, Robert was an IBM Divisional Executive, responsible for the World Wide Marketing of several major IBM computer systems, including the System/38, which ultimately became the IBM AS/400. A veteran of 20 years with IBM, he held a variety of sales and marketing management positions, and achieved many honors, including being named the President of the IBM 100 Per Cent Club in one year (Number One Salesman in the IBM company), and IBM’s Manager of the Year in another. He was also well known at IBM for sponsoring such technology innovations as virtual memory and multiprocessing. He wrote and produced several of the famous IBM Hundred Per Cent Club national meetings, and has worked with such entertainment industry luminaries as Peter Gabriel, Mick Jagger, Bob Newhart, Gene Roddenberry, Ezra Stone, and Robert Abel.
Robert has been engaged by many key companies, in Entertainment/Business/ Platform/Convergence Industry planning and development, including Microsoft, IBM, SGI, Ingram Micro and Avnet, as well as by most of the major Hollywood studios. He was E&S’ Entertainment Industry contact for such ground breaking products as Virtual Reality (VR) rides for IWERKS and United Artists Theatres. He regularly is featured as a Keynote Speaker on Technology Content/Convergence Topics at major trade shows, in such diverse arenas/venues as NAB, CES, COMDEX, SIGGRAPH, and ITECH. His diversity is indicated by recent addresses to executives at the Data Protection Summit on the arcane discipline of computer virtualization, as well as earlier that month keynoting a main tent Kick Off on Business Intelligence & Customer Centricity at a Fortune 1000 Executive Conference.
A former USAF F-106 jet fighter pilot, he served his tour in Washington D.C., as well as working in the Pentagon on Top Secret Operations Research projects. An Indiana State Amateur Golf Champion, he played college golf for Michigan State University. He has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Electronics (Michigan State), an MBA in International Finance (USC), and an MFA in Motion Picture Production (USC), all with High Honors. He has taught Feature Film Production & Distribution at UCLA Extension part time for several years as well as the Final Case Course for the USC Graduate School of Business.
