Jerry Saltz Biography

Jerry Saltz has been the senior art critic for New York Magazine since 2007 and previously held the same position at the Village Voice. He is a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Criticism, having been nominated three times for this prestigious award. Saltz won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2018 and received nominations in 2001 and 2006. Additionally, he earned the Frank Jewett Mather Award in Art Criticism from the College Art Association in 2007. His extensive teaching career includes roles at Columbia University, Yale, the Rhode Island School of Design, and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Saltz has lectured at numerous esteemed institutions such as Harvard, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Known for his engaging and accessible style, he has delivered presentations, such as "The Good, the Bad, and the Very Bad: A Year in the Life of an Art Critic," which provide insightful and entertaining views into the world of contemporary art.

In addition to his criticism and lectures, Saltz has authored significant publications in the field. His book “How to Be an Artist” debuted at number 12 on the New York Times Best Seller hardcover nonfiction list in March 2020.
