Christine Ervin Biography

Christine Ervin is a national leader on market-based strategies for green buildings, clean energy, and climate change. With over 30 years of experience, Ervin addresses these pivotal issues not just through theory or rhetoric, but with demonstrable on-the-ground results from leading private-public collaborations that foster sustainable markets and technologies.

As the first President and CEO of the U.S. Green Building Council, Ervin was pivotal in transforming the nonprofit from a startup into a powerful market force with 5,000 companies and organizations as members. Under her leadership, the organization set the LEED® building rating program as the national green building standard in the U.S. and several other countries. She also spearheaded the launch of the Greenbuild international conference and tradeshow, which in 2009 drew 29,000 attendees.

During her tenure as the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Energy in the Clinton Administration, Ervin directed the nation's $1 billion portfolio of clean energy technologies and market delivery programs. Key initiatives during her time included a Million Solar Roofs, new private capital financing tools, a sustainable community center, streamlining nation’s appliance standards, and an EPA partnership on ENERGY STAR. She previously directed the Oregon Department of Energy, further establishing her leadership in energy policy and innovation.

Currently, Ervin serves on numerous public and private boards, including the American Council on Renewable Energy and Green Electronics Council. She is also an Editor-at-Large for Greener World Media. From her Portland-based firm, Christine Ervin/Co, she consults, speaks, and writes on topics such as "The New Industrial Revolution," "The Exuberant World of Green Buildings," and "Clean Energy." Her work continues to influence and drive forward the agendas of clean energy and sustainable environmental practices.

Today’s environmental and social challenges are accelerating, scaling and interconnecting with each other. Climate change is the prime example affecting everything from economic damages to national security. Most policy responses haven’t kept up with these new forces. Christine makes the case for redesigning strategies for speed, scale and systemic impacts drawing inspiration from leadership in public and private sectors.

  • Energy 3.0

Today's clean energy markets are growing faster than even enthusiasts predicted years ago — and much faster than mainstream analysts continue to project. Christine captures the fast trajectory of new technologies, obstacles that remain and what lies ahead including their role in U.S. competitiveness, jobs and decarbonizing our economy. She also focuses on the “soft” side of hard technologies that can make all the difference between a laboratory curiosity and a product that sweeps the market.

  • Greening our Built World

Why is the green building market such a hotbed of innovation around the world? How does it translate the theory of sustainability into tangible results that affect people where they live and work? Christine’s fast-paced profile covers the latest trends, drivers, and inspiring case studies that demonstrate why this market is so crucial for health, prosperity and reducing risks from a disruptive climate.

  • More than a Moonshot: Our Legacy

Scientists recently gave us a 12-year window to cut emissions 50 percent by 2030 in order to reduce severe climate disruption. This stark outlook has prompted proposals such as the “Green New Deal,” spurring fresh conversations about our future and how emerging technologies and trends factor in. Christine paints the landscape on a large canvas — weaving together a reality check on current status, fact-checking different perspectives and show-casing high-impact strategies for winning this Earthshot.
