Alison Levine Biography

Alison Levine is a trailblazing polar explorer and mountaineer who has achieved incredible feats in some of the world’s harshest environments. She led the first American Women’s Everest Expedition and completed the Adventure Grand Slam, which involves climbing the highest peak on each continent and skiing to both the North and South Poles—an accomplishment achieved by only twenty people worldwide. In 2008, she became the first American to traverse 600 miles across Antarctica to the South Pole, following the legendary route of Reinhold Messner. Despite having undergone three heart surgeries and suffering from Raynaud’s disease, which puts her at risk for frostbite, Levine continues to set records, including two first ascents in Antarctica and Nepal in 2016.

Beyond her outdoor adventures, Levine has also built an impressive career in the corporate world. She worked in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, earned an MBA from Duke University, and spent three years at Goldman Sachs. In 2003, she shifted gears to politics, serving as deputy finance director for Arnold Schwarzenegger's successful gubernatorial campaign in California. Her diverse experiences have helped her develop a unique perspective on leadership and teamwork.

Levine has shared her leadership expertise in both academic and professional settings. She spent four years as an adjunct professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point, remains a faculty member at the Thayer Leader Development Group, and is a Senior Fellow at Duke University's Coach K Center on Leadership & Ethics. She is the author of the bestseller "On the Edge: Leadership Lessons from Mount Everest" and a contributor on "Leadership in Dangerous Situations." Her insights have made her a sought-after consultant and keynote speaker for Fortune 500 companies, sports teams, and global forums, including the World Economic Forum at Davos.

In addition to her work in leadership development, Levine founded the Climb High Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering jobless women in Uganda by training them to become trekking guides and porters. Her foundation enabled the first group of women to climb Uganda’s highest peak, Mt. Stanley, and her efforts are the focus of the PBS documentary "Living Courageously." Levine is also the executive producer of the upcoming film "The Glass Ceiling," which tells the story of Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, the first Nepali woman to summit Mount Everest.

Alison Levine Speaking Topics

  • Lessons from the Ledge

You can’t control the environment, only the way you react to it. Alison Levine makes a compelling case that the principles that lead to success in the world of extreme adventure also apply to everyday settings–in business and in life. Levine draws authentic parallels between the mountains and the uncontrollable environments that people deal with every day — at work, at home, and in their communities. Set against the backdrop of her remarkable expeditions, Levine’s presentations provide a framework to help people scale whatever big peaks they aspire to climb (be they literal or figurative) by offering practical, humorous, and often unorthodox advice about how to take risks, improve teamwork and deal with changing environments. Her breathtaking visuals and tales of survival will educate, entertain and inspire your audience to reach new heights.

Having served as the team captain of the first American Women’s Everest Expedition, Levine combines her knowledge of mountaineering with twenty years of business experience in order to deliver a customized, relevant message that focuses on the parallels between staying alive on the world’s most dangerous peaks and succeeding in a fast-paced business world. Her breathtaking visuals will take you on a journey to some of the world’s most extreme environments; where determination is every bit as important as skill when it comes to survival…and willpower is the most essential piece of equipment.

  • On the Edge: The Art of High-Impact Leadership

Imagine yourself on the highest mountain in the world. You have to deal with the physiological effects of extreme altitude–along with bone-chilling temperatures, battering winds, and a climbing team that’s counting on all of its members to make smart decisions. There’s simply no room for poor judgment — one mistake or misstep can result in an “unrecoverable error.” In any situation where lives on are the line or the stakes are exceptionally high–there’s no better training ground for leaders than settings where people are pushed beyond their perceived limits. Drawing on her experience as team captain of the first American Women’s Everest Expedition, Alison Levine makes a compelling case that the leadership principles that apply in the world of extreme adventure also apply to today’s rigorously competitive business environments.

  • Rise Up: Finding Strength & Conquering Challenges in Tough Times

Why is it that some people experience fear and anxiety following stressful events (like living through a pandemic), while others come out of it as a better version of themselves? In her new speech focused on post-traumatic growth (PTG), history-making polar explorer Alison Levine recounts some of the most epic survival stories of all time: from a teenage holocaust survivor who outsmarted the Nazis (who happens to be a family member) to famed Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton—there is much to be learned from those who have survived the unthinkable.

Throughout this moving presentation, Alison uncovers the specific tactics we should use to stack the deck in our favor so that we (and the people around us) experience growth from tough times vs. feeling overwhelmed by stress and doubt. She takes audiences to the most remote, extreme places on the planet and demonstrates how leaders can help people succeed in unpredictable environments and move toward PTG.

The world will always be full of challenges—and whether we choose to rise up or retreat after them will change our destiny.

  • Women Moving Mountains™

Although she made history climbing the world’s highest peaks, Alison Levine will tell you that her most memorable climb wasn’t Mount Everest—it was a little-known peak called Mount Stanley in the Rwenzori Mountains in the war-torn area between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In this session, she recounts how asking ONE QUESTION resulted in lifting barriers for women who were previously prevented from earning a sustainable living wage because of longstanding cultural beliefs. Her Women Moving Mountains™ program (keynote, panel discussions, and coaching sessions) demonstrates how having the courage to take small steps can lead to big changes and gives people a roadmap to achieve more than they ever thought possible.
