Cynthia Lowen is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker and award-winning writer known for addressing critical social issues through her documentaries. She is both the producer and writer of "Bully," a feature documentary that follows a year in the lives of students experiencing America's bullying crisis. The film, developed in collaboration with director Lee Hirsch, earned Lowen two Emmy nominations and the prestigious Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia Award for Excellence in Journalism, alongside the 2013 Stanley Kramer Award from the Producers Guild of America.

In addition to "Bully," Lowen directed and produced "Netizens," a documentary that delves into the lives of women facing online harassment, now distributed by HBO Max. Her most recent work, "Battleground," which premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival and is available on STARZ, examines the intersection of abortion and politics in America. Through these films, Lowen has spearheaded significant impact campaigns, such as The Bully Project Social Action Campaign, and collaborated with organizations like ACLU and Planned Parenthood.

Beyond her film work, Lowen is a celebrated poet, having won the 2012 National Poetry Series for her collection "The Cloud That Contained the Lightning," which uses the figure of J. Robert Oppenheimer to explore the legacy of nuclear weapons. Her poetic accomplishments have earned her the 2013 Women Authoring Change Fellowship and recognition as a Best New Poet of 2008. Lowen grew up in Amherst, Massachusetts, graduated from Colorado College, and received her MFA in creative writing from Sarah Lawrence College.

Nurturing Safe Relationships: Breaking Cycles of Bullying, Dating Violence & Domestic Abuse

Research shows a strong correlation between youth who are exposed to domestic violence and those who engage in bullying behaviors, as well as those who perpetrate or experience physical violence in intimate relationships. While one in three young people ages 14-20 have experienced dating violence, both boys and girls who engage in bullying behaviors are far more likely to report physical violence in relationships than their peers.

In this powerful multimedia presentation, Cynthia Lowen explores how communities can empower young women and men to engage in healthy, safe relationships.
