Joan Morgan Biography

Dr. Joan Morgan is an award-winning journalist and author, renowned for her insightful cultural criticism and commentary on race and gender within the hip-hop community. She began her career as one of the original staff writers at "Vibe" magazine and later contributed as an editor and columnist for "Spin". Morgan's writings have also been featured in publications such as "MS.", "More", "Interview", "Working Mother", "GIANT", and "Essence" magazines. In January 2000, she enhanced her influential role by joining "Essence" magazine as an executive editor.

Morgan introduced the term "hip-hop feminism" in 1999 with her influential book "When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost". This book, which is incorporated into college curricula nationwide, marked a pivotal moment in cultural studies. Continuing her examination of the hip-hop culture's impact, her recent book "She Begat This" provides a critical analysis of "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" and its cultural significance.
