Mark Owen Biography

Mark Owen is a former United States Navy SEAL who served his country for 14 years, participating in over 13 deployments in support of combat operations and the Global War on Terror (GWOT). Owen received his bachelor’s degree in 1998, and upon graduating from college, he enlisted in the Navy to pursue his dream of serving his country as a Navy SEAL. He successfully graduated as BUDS class 226 “Honor-man” and was subsequently stationed at SEAL Team Five. During his first deployment as a Navy SEAL, the events of 9/11 unfolded, and Owen was among some of the first to be deployed in support of the GWOT.

In 2004, Owen completed selection and training to enter the ranks of the Naval Special Warfare Development Group. His extensive service included several significant operations, such as the Maersk Alabama hijacking rescue operation in 2009 and Operation Neptune Spear in 2011. The latter operation culminated with Bissonnette being present on the third floor of Osama bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad when the terrorist leader was killed. Owen continued to volunteer and serve at the forefront throughout his career till his eventual departure from service in 2012.

Over the course of his military career, Owen was recognized with more than 30 medals and awards, including the Silver Star, 5 Bronze Stars with “V,” Purple Heart, Joint Commendation with “V,” Navy Commendation with “V,” Presidential Unit Citation and numerous other awards. His unique experiences and insights would later be channeled into his work as an author, resulting in two New York Times Bestselling books titled; “No Easy Day” and “No Hero.”

Moving on from his active military service, Owen has continued to contribute to the community, serving on the Advisory Board for the GWOT Memorial Foundation and advocating for transitioning veterans. His advocacy extends to helping raise money and awareness for multiple veteran-related charities, and he is vocal about the challenges he and other veterans have faced while transitioning out of military service and into the civilian world. Owen has also had a significant impact in the television industry, serving as an executive producer on the CBS hit show "SEAL Team,” now streaming on Paramount Plus.

Mark Owen Speaking Topics

  • Mark Owen Presentation Overview

Military stories and analogies have long since saturated the corporate and athletic vernacular for the purposes of “rallying the troops” to new performance limits. The practical impact of this subject matter, however, is limited to the credibility of the presenter, his or her ability to convey the information in such a way as to leave actionable and long lasting impact on the audience, and the audience's capacity and willingness to assimilate the information. As a former senior member of one of the most elite of the elite military units in the world Mark has an insurmountable level of credibility matched by his ability to captivate audience members regardless of their social, financial, or professional status amidst any industry. A 14 year veteran of the U.S Navy. The final 8 years of his career spent at the most elite unit in the SEAL teams where he ultimately earned the level of “Team Leader” Mark conducted hundreds of missions throughout 13 distinct combat deployments overseas. Author of the New York Times Bestsellers “No Easy Day: The First Hand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden” and “No Hero: The Evolution of a Navy SEAL” the way in which Mark conveys the principles intrinsic to success in military special operations is readily assimilated to enhancing corporate culture and operations.

    Main Talking Points

    • Valuable information is conveyed which relates the indoctrinated life lessons learned in a survival based landscape and how those translate to both the most elite level of military special operations as they do to any realm of the corporate world.

    • Overview of BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL Training). One of the most challenging of all military special operations selection courses. Graduating first in his class and how his actions that lead to that outcome are central towards any company in securing the height of their performance.

    • Experiences in the SEAL teams and the process of making it into the most elite unit in the SEAL Teams. How these translate to what could become the indomitable special operations mentality of any professional endeavor.

    • Teamwork: How Mark takes no solitary credit for what he's accomplished. How communication and adaptability are fundamental for building a successful team; and how these qualities transition seamlessly into any conceivable endeavor that involves two or more people. The chain is only as strong as the weakest link and in this way there cannot be a strong enough level of cohesion shared between every single link in the chain/individual in the work place.

    • Comfortable Being Uncomfortable: The key to advancing the self• excluding complacency from the human experience in order to push oneself towards continual advancement. Maintaining relentless momentum in the quest to always optimize performance. Becoming comfortable is as thematically dangerous for any working professional as it the most highly trained unit in military special operations.

    • Shared Sense of Purpose: The fundamental unifying link between members of team which formulates the basis for that team achieving landmark results• together.

    • Prioritize and Eat One Bite at a Time: A unique task management strategy for negotiating the execution of what at might first seem to be an insurmountable challenge

    • Be All In...All the Time: A gambling strategy assimilated into any task towards which an individual directs his/her attention. Rooted in a powerful story told by Mark that began with a special operations leader of his that is no longer with us.

    • Change, Evolve, and Adapt: You are either advancing or declining in your preparation. Remaining the same is no different than going backwards because a competitor out there will advance while you go no where.

    • Relationships/Trust: Each one begets the other. Both are earned, and neither develops by accident. Lead by example while demonstrating consistency in your results based actions. Relationships that are forged in trust are intrinsic to high level teamwork.

    • 3 Foot World: Importance of prioritizing tasks and focusing on the task at hand to the exclusion non-essential factors. All that matters is the mission objective, the means of it's actualization, and what resides within each person's control. All factors outside of the individual's control serve no useful purpose in the accomplishment of the mission.

    Conclusion

    • A rare opportunity to advance the operational value of your organization employees based upon principles used by a former team leader of one of the most elite military special operations units in the world.

    • Stories are shared in an effort to impact the audience in such a way as to advance the mindset to an unforeseen level.
