Lee Eisenberg Biography

Lee Eisenberg began his career at Esquire right out of graduate school, becoming editor-in-chief just a few years later. During nearly two decades at the magazine, he collaborated with literary icons such as Nora Ephron, Truman Capote, and Tom Wolfe, and served as the founding editor of Esquire in the UK. His editorial leadership helped shape the magazine’s reputation as a hub of literary excellence.

In 1991, Eisenberg became one of six original partners of the Edison Project, aimed at designing a business and academic plan for innovative schools. Later, he joined Time Inc. as a consulting editor, where he contributed to the launch of key initiatives including Time.com, Time for Kids, and The Time 100, a collaboration with CBS News that chronicled the most influential people of the 20th century.

Eisenberg’s writing career expanded with the release of "The Number: A Completely Different Way to Think About the Rest of Your Life" in 2006. The book became a national bestseller, earning recognition from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Businessweek, which named it one of the top ten financial books of the year. His subsequent public-speaking career has taken him across the globe. In 2009, he published "Shoptimism: Why the American Consumer Will Keep on Buying No Matter What," offering insights into the dynamics of marketing and consumer behavior.

Eisenberg’s latest work, "The Point Is: Making Sense of Birth, Death, and Everything in Between," was released by Twelve, an imprint of the Hachette Book Group. In addition to his literary achievements, he has served as chief creative and marketing officer at two public companies, been a visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, and held a residency at the Newberry Library in Chicago. A founding father of Rotisserie League Baseball, the precursor to fantasy sports, Eisenberg now divides his time between Chicago and New York City.

Lee Eisenberg Speaking Topics

  • Live for the Moment -- or Plan for the Future? The American Psyche in Two Acts

Six roller-coaster years ago, Lee Eisenberg began research that led to the 2006 publication of his best-selling book about the financial and emotional challenges inherent in retirement planning: The Number: A Completely Different Way to Think About the Rest of Your Life. The book brought national focus on how Americans -• across the wealth spectrum -• were largely confused, anxious and reluctant to put a financial plan in place. The key message, delivered at numerous talks to industry insiders and their customers: the most enlightened way to think about the Number requires that each of us address two parallel questions and do so simultaneously: How much do I need? What do I need it for?

Eisenberg’s newly published book -• Shoptimism: Why the American Consumer Will Keep on Buying No Matter What -• adds a provocative second dimension to his ongoing inquiry into how we choose (or fail) to mindfully manage our personal financial lives. The Number took readers on a journey through the mists of financial planning and the challenges of personal saving. Shoptimism complements it by zeroing in on why and how we make our spending decisions: why some us live in consumption’s tight grip, while others balance its pleasures and pitfalls.

“Live for the Moment -• or Plan for the Future?” is an engagingly illustrated talk that bridges the themes expressed in both books: Why we save (or don’t); why we spend (or don’t). And it illuminates these intersecting issues from two points of view: those who market everything from mutual funds to baby diapers and those who pick and choose from among a boundless array of products and services. The takeaway: a set of keen, entertaining and actionable insights into the American psyche, 2012.
