Dr. Sumon Mazumdar is the Lead Director of the Securities & Finance Practice at Navigant Economics, LLC and a member of the Finance faculty of the Haas School of Business at the University of California-Berkeley since 1996, where he teaches corporate finance, derivatives and valuation at the graduate and undergraduate level.
As a consultant over the past 16 years Dr. Mazumdar has advised clients on economic issues related to complex litigation. Dr. Mazumdar has advised major banks, brokerage firms, government agencies and corporations on economic issues related to certification, materiality and loss causation in some of the largest stock and bond-related securities fraud class actions; mutual fund market timing, the valuation of derivatives linked to bonds; structured finance products; employee stock option s valuation and backdating; damages related to contract disputes; Ponzi schemes; valuation of intellectual property using real options analysis; the valuation of illiquid assets including partnership interests and employee stock options.
Dr. Mazumdar is amongst the most prolific finance scholars world-wide according to a peer-reviewed study in Financial Management. His research, which spans corporate finance, derivatives, investments, bank risk management, securities fraud issues, has been cited by the Wall Street Journal, the Economist, Reuters, Bloomberg, Forbes, and in an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court. Dr. Mazumdar is included in Harvard Business School’s Profiles in Business and Management: An International Directory of Scholars and Their Research.
Dr. Mazumdar awards include multi-year research grants from Canada’s premier Canadian research grant agency, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and Quebec’s FCAR (Fonds pour la Formation de chercheurs et l'aide à la recherché). Dr. Mazumdar has been an invited speaker on risk management, derivatives and corporate finance issues at universities and international academic conferences and research institutes such as the U.S. Federal Reserve Banks, and the International Monetary Fund. Dr. Mazumdar has presented his work on employee stock option valuation to the U.S. SEC’s Chief Economist and Chief Accountant and their staff.
Dr. Mazumdar has previously held tenured professorships in finance at McGill and York Universities in Canada, taught at University of Strathclyde (U.K.), the People’s University of China, Beijing, University of Texas at Dallas, and Queen’s University, Canada, and served as an honorary academic scholar at the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.
Dr. Mazumdar holds a PhD and an MA in Economics from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas and was included in Who’s Who Among Internatio nal Students in American Universities & Colleges (1988-1989 edition). Dr. Mazumdar serves on the Class Actions and Securities committees of the American Bar Association’s Section of Litigation and is a member of the American Economics Association, American Finance Association, European Finance Association, and Financial Management.
