Buddy Guy is a renowned blues guitarist and singer, recognized for his profound influence on modern blues and rock music. Born in Lettsworth, Louisiana, Guy began playing guitar in his teenage years and relocated to Chicago in the late 1950s, where he became a key figure in the city’s renowned blues scene. He gained recognition as a session guitarist for Chess Records, backing icons like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, while refining his unique, high-energy playing style.
In the 1960s and ‘70s, Guy’s solo career flourished as he partnered with harmonica player Junior Wells and released several acclaimed albums. His raw, passionate performances and pioneering use of distortion and feedback influenced rock guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Guy's influence was acknowledged when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 14, 2005, by Eric Clapton and B.B. King. Though his popularity in the U.S. fluctuated throughout his career, he remained a revered figure among musicians and blues enthusiasts worldwide.
Experiencing a significant resurgence in the 1990s with the release of albums like "Damn Right, I’ve Got the Blues," Guy won eight Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award and Best Blues Album for "Born to Play Guitar" in 2016. He received the National Medal of Arts in 2003 and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2012. Guy's energetic guitar playing, expressive vocals, and showmanship have made his live performances iconic.
Besides recording and touring, Guy has contributed to preserving blues music through his Chicago club, Buddy Guy’s Legends, a gathering place for blues artists and fans. Even into his 80s, he continued to perform at least 130 nights a year, including shows at his Chicago blues club, until announcing his retirement from performing in 2024 at the age of 88. As part of his retirement, in June 2024, he headlined the Chicago Blues Festival as part of his "Buddy Guy Damn Right Farewell Tour." Guy's legacy as a link between traditional blues and modern rock has solidified his place as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, ranking 27th in Rolling Stone magazine's 2023 list of the greatest guitarists and his song "Stone Crazy" was ranked 78th in the list of the "100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time."
In addition to his music, Guy has authored books such as "Damn Right I've Got the Blues" released in 1999 and his autobiography "When I Left Home: My Story" in 2012. He also appeared in the 2009 crime film "In the Electric Mist" and the 2025 period horror film "Sinners." He is known for his signature guitar model, the "Buddy Guy Standard Stratocaster®," available through Fender, which features a custom polka-dot finish, a tribute to his late mother.
