Daniel J. Hilferty is a business executive who serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Comcast Spectacor and Governor of the Philadelphia Flyers for the National Hockey League. Widely respected as a passionate, dedicated leader in Philadelphia and beyond, Hilferty directly oversees the company’s full portfolio, including the Philadelphia Flyers, Wells Fargo Center, Spectacor Gaming, and more.
Hilferty joined Comcast Spectacor after leading Philadelphia’s successful bid to be a host city for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ and continues to serve as Chair of the Board of Directors of Philadelphia Soccer 2026. The 501(c)(3) non-profit organization will serve as the governing body for the city’s Host Committee.
Hilferty previously held the role of CEO of Independence Blue Cross, one of the nation’s leading health insurers, from 2010 to 2020. During his tenure, the company tripled in size, expanding through its affiliates and serving over eight million people across the country. There, he led the transformation of health care in the region, seeking innovative technologies and new models of care that would increase the quality and lower the cost of care. He led the creation of the Independence Blue Cross Center for Innovation; launched Tandigm Health, a unique venture that arms primary care physicians with the tools and data needed to better manage chronic conditions and deliver more personalized care; and established Quil, a joint venture with Comcast NBCUniversal dedicated to revolutionizing the consumer experience in health care.
After retiring from Independence, Hilferty launched Dune View Strategie, a strategic advisory firm for small and mid-sized healthcare companies. Dune View Strategies advises and invests in small and mid-size healthcare companies and start-ups as they bring their transformational services, technologies and products to market.
He has also held many other leadership positions throughout his career, including serving as President and CEO of AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies and as Senior Vice President of Government Affairs at Mercy Health Corporation, all Philadelphia headquartered companies.
Hilferty is a sought-after speaker on leadership, transforming health care, and the role of technology and big data. He has appeared on MSNBC, CNN, and in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and other national media. He is among a select group of nonpartisan health care leaders called upon by government leaders for advice on health care reform.
Hilferty serves as lead Independent Director of Essential Utilities, Chair of Healthpilot and Philadelphia Soccer 2026, and is on the Board of FS Investments Credit Income Fund. In 2015, he served as Co-Chair on the executive leadership cabinet of the World Meeting of Families which brought Pope Francis to Philadelphia.
Hilferty earned his undergraduate degree from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and a master’s degree in public administration from American University.
