Eileen was raised as a non-denominational Protestant. She became an Episcopalian in high school and later expanded to Judaism before giving birth to two sons. She will recount the trials and blessings of her spiritual path, what it has meant to share in different traditions, and raise children within one of them. Her honest and respectful presentation, involving regrets and benefits of her religious upbringing contribute to her metaphorical belief that “all rivers run into the same sea.”
Eileen’s father, David Rockefeller, has often told her, “It’s easy to give money away, but it’s not easy to give it well.” Making a list of your common values is the first of many ways to turn the burden or confusion of deciding how and where to give money into pleasure and satisfaction. Eileen builds from the weight of her family’s expectations, which made her early years of philanthropy a chore, to the partnership with her husband that turned philanthropy into a thrilling adventure in measurable success. She gives tips along the way for how to make your own philanthropy more successful than you ever dreamed.
Using her own family of origin as the blueprint, Eileen shares examples that both served and did not serve the sense of unity within her extended family. She describes how her generation learned from the examples of her uncles and aunts, and how she has sought alternate means of showing support and solidarity, from rituals that included everyone to structures for deep listening. She also outlines her family’s shared values around philanthropy and how it’s the glue that has held her family together for seven generations.
Building on the recent Boston marathon bombing, Eileen will define social and emotional learning, and talk about how this kind of intelligence, which she learned as a child, is central to success in raising and educating children, and in building a healthy society. Using her own experience, she will describe various examples that can be used as tools for success in school, family, friendships, marriage and parenting.
Exploring the values that contribute to a healthy family and life, Eileen talks about her own family’s legacy, and how nature became a great substitute for material pleasures. She describes it in the context of her paternal heritage of finding refuge and restoration in nature.
Eileen shares her search for identity in one of America’s best-known families. Her authentic and often humorous stories will inspire others to find their own place of belonging. She will share stories of how she came to understand her siblings and find points of connection with each of them, as well with other family members.
