Jakob Dylan Biography

Jakob Luke Dylan was born December 9, 1969 in New York City and is a singer and songwriter, best known as the front man for the indie rock band, The Wallflowers. Dylan also happens to be the son of famed musician Bob Dylan. In addition to his success in the band, The Wallflowers, Dylan has released two solo albums to date. Born into a musical environment, Dylan was surrounded by his father's music and the musician friends of his father’s; however it was the band, The Clash, which Dylan cites as the biggest influence on his desire to play music. By the time he was in high school Dylan was playing guitar in a number of different bands. Dylan went on to form a band with his friend Tobi Miller, and the duo called themselves, The Apples, which later morphed in The Wallflowers. Dylan decided to make the move to Los Angeles in an attempt to further his career. The current line-up of the band consists of Dylan on vocals and guitar; Greg Richling on bass, Stuart Mathis on guitar; and Fred Eltringham on drums.

The Wallflowers got their start playing gigs at the famous Canter's delicatessen in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles in 1989. The band was quickly snapped up by Virgin Records and released their self-titled album in 1992. The album was a commercial failure and subsequently they were released from their contract by Virgin Records. The band regrouped and hit the road with bands, such as 10,000 Maniacs, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Cracker, and The Spin Doctors. As a result of their growing popularity, and time on the road exposing their music to larger audiences, The Wallflowers landed a record deal with Interscope Records. Their debut for the label, and second studio album, “Bringing Down the Horse,” arrived in 1996 and was producer by T-Bone Burnett. The album was a commercial success and spawned the hits: “6th Avenue Heartache” and “One Headlight.” The Wallflowers became overnight sensations and won two Grammy Awards, for 'Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group' and 'Best Rock Song' for “One Headlight.”

The Wallflowers' third offering, “Breach” emerged in 2000, and was quickly followed by “Red Letter Days” in 2002. By 2005 The Wallflowers and Interscope Records had come to the end of their arrangement with the release of the band's fifth studio album, “Rebel, Sweetheat” (2005). The band parted ways with the record label and took a break from music. 2006 saw Dylan embark on a solo career when he signed with Columbia Records. Dylan wasted no time working on his debut solo album, “Seeing Things,” which arrived in 2008. 2008 also saw Dylan perform at the Newport Folk Festival, the Austin City Limits Festival, on the Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and Late Night with Conan O'Brien in September 2008, and taped performances for a number of folk radio programs that aired throughout the summer. Dylan also performed in the U.K. on the famous music show, “Later... with Jools Holland.” That same year saw The Wallflowers perform on the festival circuit, including appearances at the OC Fair, South Carolina Balloon Festival, and the Deadwood Jam, among others. 2009 saw The Wallflowers hit the road once again as they embarked on a 34 city tour across the states.

2010 marked Dylan's second solo album, “Women and Country,” the album brought Dylan and producer T-Bone Burnett back together again, and was met with positive responses from fans and critics alike. Dylan supported the album with a small tour with his backing band, Three Legs. The tour extended to the U.K., performing in London, Glasgow, and Dublin. 2012 saw The Wallflowers back in the studio working on their sixth studio album, “Glad All Over” which arrived later that same year. Dylan continues to perform as part of The Wallflowers and as a solo artist.
