Providing emotional stories about once being a hopeless youth offers a powerful reminder as to the “why” behind why you do what you do. After reminding attendees of the true impact they have as Just 1 Person in a child’s life, I explore my life-long journey of discovery, hope, and permanence and how various child-serving professionals impacted this journey, both negatively and positively. This presentation often includes the option of incorporating live performance of poetry and lyrics once used to inspire national child welfare legislation. The dots are connected as practical approaches to connecting and empowering are highlighted by uncommon stories of working as an RN in Mental Health and Pediatric Emergency, and as a Mobile Crisis Worker.
A Story of Finding Passion & Purpose Through Health Care Professions. Inspire students to explore a vast array of health careers, or re-inspire professionals to find passion and purpose at work and home. Great for orientation events, recruitment events, and annual celebrations, among others.
One of the most important aspects of learning to implement TIC principles in everyday practice is finding ways to understand the “Why” behind actions, lack of action, and the systems we live and work in. The Strategic Sharing Panel provides a nonjudgmental platform for service recipients to share about their journeys in front of parents, professionals, direct care providers, administrators, and executives. The panel is presented in a structured format that humanizes individuals while using a discussion format to verbally analyze their “case file.” Follow up questions highlight both the positive and negative experiences prior to ending the session with an open forum Q&A. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions about the stories and experienced shared. The goal is to create opportunities for self-reflection and begin viewing the experiences of service recipients from the perspective of TIC principles.
Service recipients can be any range of people including, but not limited to, customers, students, at-risk youth, and adult clients. Panel participants are chosen from within organizations that are local to the region where the seminar will be held. The panel is facilitated by Travis Lloyd.
This is a 45-60 minute keynote OR a 60-90 minute workshop.
This presentation is designed as an interactive self-reflective workshop that walks attendees through a series of activities that focus on defining or re-defining your individual purpose statement. The session starts by hearing about Travis Lloyd’s personal experiences in struggling to find purpose and the steps he took to break through to a more fulfilling life. Mr. Lloyd then guides attendees through those steps. These steps include making sense of your past life experiences, understanding how key past moments impact your present life, and identifying your strengths, passions, and values to align with a bigger purpose in life. This is a process that can be replicated with youth and/or adults and is a practice that, if used at least yearly, can boost clarity of purpose and even job satisfaction and performance.
In this Strategic Sharing Workshop you will explore the best practices for using your own personal story in a way that empowers you to create change in the world. Participants will have the opportunity to review the reasons why they want to share their personal experiences with others, how to do it in a safe way (avoid oversharing), and who to choose who to share your story with (not everyone deserves your life details). After learning the basics of using your story to impact change you’ll have the opportunity to map our your journey and practice what you’ve learned with the other workshop members (sharing in the workshop is not required).
Great for staff/parents/admins as well as youth audiences
The youth panel starts with identifying 3-4 youth who have their own stories about foster care, adoption, mental health, advocacy, or related experiences. If time allows, those youth meet with me at least one day prior to the event day, in person or via Skype, to explore strategic sharing. This is done in collaboration with a trusted adult in the youth’s life. I advise them on how to share their story in a way that helps others understand difficult issues in a compassionate way. The youth are provided a homework assignment of writing out 1-2 paragraph answers to four specific questions. During the panel session, I will strategically interview them utilizing these four questions as a framework for the interview and providing clarification statements and follow-up questions as a small group in front of the audience. After the core questions have been answered audience members are then given the opportunity to ask questions that are fielded by me. This allows me to add insight/clarity/support, as needed. Panels such as these allow youth audiences to not feel alone and adult audiences to have a better understanding of how to connect to the youth in their lives. (This is ideal for large group, but can be small group as well).
