Michael O’Sullivan Biography

Author and keynote speaker, Michael O'Sullivan helps global audiences understand what to expect from the transition in world economics, finance and power as the era of globalization ends.

O'Sullivan has twenty years experience in global financial markets, most recently as Chief Investment Officer in the International Wealth Management Division of Credit Suisse, where he worked for twelve years. In addition to working in investment management, he was the lead contributor to Credit Suisse’s think tank, the CS Research Institute.

Michael is the author of The Levelling: What's Next After Globalization? which illustrates what’s next in politics, economics, finance and geopolitics in the post-globalization era. O'Sullivan advises what to prepare for and how we can develop solutions and strategies to problems such as social destabilization, political discontent and stunted economic growth.

O'Sullivan studied in University College Cork and received MPhil and DPhil degrees at Balliol College, Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. He lectured in finance and economics at Oxford and Princeton.

As well as being a highly acclaimed author, Michael was an independent member of Ireland’s National Economic Social Council from 2011 to 2016 and is a regular contributor to such publications a Foreign Affairs, the Financial Times, The Economist and the Wall Street Journal. O'Sullivan has also appeared as a regular guest on CNN, BBC, CNBC and Bloomberg.

    Brexit trundles on, with little achieved. Michael takes a long view here • positioning Brexit as the outcome of the rise and fall of a nation. He maps out where Britain's place in the world is, a plan for how to reorder its economy and how Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland will and can change. Many of the solution he identifies lie in British history, which is too often forgotten.

    Europe is more resilient than many think. In a world of growing tension, it has the potential to be a beacon of social democracy and enlightenment. It first needs to find the incentive structure and decision-making process that will allow it to make more effective policy, more quickly. Security is a weak spot, immigration • especially from Nigeria and Turkey — will become a greater political and social issue, and the euro-zone needs to be completed.

    Michael has over twenty years of experience as an investor, across asset classes. His investment philosophy is to discern what markets are pricing, rather than to try to fit investing around economic forecasting. He believes that markets are increasingly driven by liquidity and risk cycles than old fashioned fundamentals and that the microstructure of markets is changing in critical ways. He is also involved in investing in impact investing and digital wealth management.

  • Globalization and What Comes Next?

    Michael's thesis as laid out in The Levelling is that we are at the end of globalization as we have come to know it and that the world will now pass through a challenging transition to a multipolar world. Many are still in denial that this is happening. This will require the remaking of the international system — based around new rivalries, new institutions and new laws.

  • Economic Faultlines

    Michael started his career teaching finance and economics and has since produced research on the small advanced economy model, corporate governance, indebtedness and inequality to name a few topics • most of which are at historical extremes. He believes that the great risk to the future is that the trend rate of economic growth will be lower than we are used to and that as a result governments need to rediscover the recipe of organic economic growth (intangible infrastructure). The risk in his view is that politicians turn to fiscal activism, part of which leads to a war on profits.

  • Politics

    Politics has become stranger than fiction. In his book, The Levelling, O'Sullivan explores what new parties might look like — for example, the Governance party, Heimat Party and the Diggers. He outlines how to get new blood into politics and what kind of positive, constructive framework might replace populism — his solution is called 'The Agreement of the People'.
