Laurence H. Meyer served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve from June 1996 until January 2002. He was widely recognized as an influential member of the Federal Open Market Committee and built a reputation for independent thinking and straight talk about monetary policy. He also represented the Federal Reserve Board in several international forums, including the Financial Stability Forum, the Economic Policy Committee of the OECD, and APEC. He was responsible for monitoring developments in the Asia Pacific region and participated in U.S. bilateral dialogues with the central banks and finance ministries of Japan, China, and India.
Dr. Meyer is the President of Monetary Policy Analytics Inc. and continues to offer insights into monetary policy through his work. He co-founded Macroeconomic Advisers in 1982, initially named Laurence H. Meyer and Associates, and served as President and Chairman until 1996. This firm was renamed in 1996 when Meyer joined the Federal Reserve Board. Moreover, he is a distinguished scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. He is also the author of "A Term at The Fed: An Insider's View," which provides a detailed account of his tenure at the Federal Reserve.
Dr. Meyer is recognized as one of the nation’s leading economic forecasters and has received numerous accolades for his accurate economic predictions, including being honored three times with the prestigious Annual Forecast Award for the Blue Chip Economic Indicators. He is a fellow of the National Association of Business Economics and serves on the Board of Directors of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Meyer's extensive teaching career spanned 27 years at Washington University, where he was a professor of economics and chaired the economics department.
Dr. Meyer earned a B.A. (magna cum laude) from Yale University in 1965 and a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1970.
