Matchbox Twenty Biography

Matchbox Twenty is an American pop rock band, formed in Orlando, Florida, in 1995. The group currently comprises Rob Thomas (lead vocals, piano), Paul Doucette (drums, backing vocals), Kyle Cook (lead guitar, backing vocals) and Brian Yale (bass guitar).

Matchbox Twenty released their debut album, “Yourself or Someone Like You,” in 1996. The album received very little media coverage, while the first single, “Long Day,” had some success on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The second single, “Push,” received much larger airplay in the U.S., as well as charting at #38 on the United Kingdom Singles chart. This saw album sales slowly climb in the U.S. With the success of follow up singles such as “3 A.M.,” “Real World” and “Back 2 Good,” “Yourself or Someone Like You” went on to achieve massive sales, reaching #5 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and earning a diamond certification in the U.S.

Following the success of their debut album, the band released their second studio album, “Mad Season,” in 2000. Critical response was mixed, but the album was a commercial and chart success, reaching #3 on the Billboard 200. The lead single, “Bent,” topped the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. The second single, “If You're Gone,” received extensive airplay on adult-orientated radio stations in the U.S., in addition to charting in the U.K. The next three singles, “Mad Season,” “Angry” and “Last Beautiful Girl” were all far less successful.

Matchbox Twenty released their third album, “More Than You Think You Are,” in 2002. The album also received a mixed response from critics, and initially looked to be a commercial failure after the modest performance of the albums lead single, “Disease.” However, the second single, “Unwell,” gained an enormous radio presence in the U.S. and helped the album reach #6 on the Billboard 200. The album's third single, “Bright Lights,” was also successful.

The band then went on hiatus in 2004, and rhythm guitarist Adam Gaynor left the band in 2005, after performing on the first three studio albums. As a result, Paul Doucette took over rhythm guitar, and the band reunited and released a compilation album, “Exile on Mainstream,” in 2007, which was certified gold in the U.S. After the release, former Push Stars drummer Ryan MacMillan filled Doucette's vacated drum spot.

Matchbox Twenty then took another hiatus, but reunited again in 2010 and released their fourth album, entitled "North," in 2012. It was the first album of new material that the band has released since “More Than You Think You Are” in 2002, although they did record six new songs for “Exile on Mainstream.”
