Katy Sullivan Biography

Katy Sullivan is an award-winning and Tony-nominated actress, producer, writer, and bilateral above-knee amputee athlete. Originally from Alabama, she performed in theatre and received a BFA in acting from Webster University's Conservatory in St. Louis.

She made history as the first amputee actress to star on Broadway and starred in other productions across New York, Los Angeles, and London. Her most recent role was in the 2018 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, 'Cost of Living,' at the Manhattan Theatre Club, where she played the character Ani. Additionally, Sullivan has acted in various TV shows and films, including the critically acclaimed documentary 'Walk On.' She has appeared in popular TV series such as NBC's 'My Name is Earl,' ABC's 'Last Man Standing' and 'Station 19', FX's comedy 'Legit,' and CBS' 'NCIS: New Orleans.' Sullivan portrays Esther in 'Dexter: New Blood' on Showtime.

She co-founded SulliFlinn Productions with Becca Flinn, producing online comedy and short films. Currently, they are developing a comedy, LEGS, based on their life experiences. They were 2015 Fellows at the Producers Guild of America in their Power of Diversity program.

In addition to her acting achievements, Sullivan is a four-time US champion in the 100m. She was among the first bilateral above-the-knee amputees to compete in the Paralympics in ambulatory track when she ran in the London 2012 Paralympic Games, setting a new American record of 17.33s and finishing 6th in the World. She added 'Sports Analyst' to her list of accomplishments when she covered the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games for NBC/Universal.

    Katy was born without the bottom half of both of her legs and she grew up with a lot of added challenges due to it. While this could be seen as a large setback for her, she has been able to view it as an opportunity. Katy went to college for acting and found a lot of her success partly came because of her differences. She was able to stand out at castings and get her foot in doors due to her differences. Katy's motivational speeches go into realizing and embracing how your differences can be positive. Creating a positive outlook on situations and growing your confidence through hardships and pushing limits. She discusses personal growth and benefit through challenges and the way to pivot upon struggles.

    Katy was born with physical disabilities that impacted the way she was viewed by others. Despite her differences, her parents raised her to not focus on what set her apart. This mindset that was instilled in her helped encourage her to be willing to try new things. Being born without the bottom half of both of her legs, Katy had never ran before. With prosthetic limbs, she learned to run and went on to compete at the Paralympics as the first bilateral above the knee amputee athlete. Katy competed in the London 2012 Paralympic Games and set an American record to finish 6th in the world. She also became a four time US champion in the 400 meter. Katy was also pushing the limits in acting. She starred in the 2018 Pulitzer Prize winning play, Cost of Living. She also has been on a variety of television shows and films, including a award winning documentary.
