Fear does not stop death. It stops life. Riley Sewell is no stranger to the power of fear. Like the movie “The Impossible,” Riley and her family survived the 2004 South-East Asian Tsunami on an island in Thailand. As a ten-year-old girl, she ran to high ground, fearing for her life, as a 75-foot tsunami destroyed everything in its path. The traumatic event, which resulted in the death of 230,000 people, caused her to spend the last few decades learning how to fight fear. But this event also forced Riley to answer the question: what will you do with this precious life, knowing that tomorrow is not guaranteed? Riley concluding the most meaningful life is living to serve others. As Mother Teresa says, “a life not lived for others is not a life.”
In this talk, Riley will inspire the audience to embrace life courageously, fight down fear daily, and have the courage to care for others. This talk encourages the experience of courage which transforms and moves us beyond ourselves in the service of others.

We all have tsunamis in our lives• it’s not if but when… How do we respond to the tsunamis of our lives? In this inspiring talk, Riley shares the story of how she survived a tsunami in 2004 and how each of us can respond to hardship with courage, not fear.
The trauma of the tsunami changed Riley forever. She gained a new appreciation for the preciousness of life and greater empathy for others. But not all the changes were positive. Nightmares and a paralyzing fear of the ocean haunted her. A few months after the tsunami, Riley’s parents enrolled her in beach lifeguard training to teach her the more you face your fear, the less power it has over you.
When Riley's father saw her terrified eyes and trembling body on the first day of training, he said, “Riley, either courage or fear exists in your life, and you need to choose which one wins. All you need is a little more courage.” Riley advocates for attendees to not stop with courage, but go a step further and use their courage to help others who are also facing similar fears. We live in a world that is drenched with fear, and people are living through their own “tsunamis” every day. With “a little more courage”, you can turn the very place you feared into a place of victory and impact. In recent years, Riley's favorite thing has become surfing and teaching others how to surf! What if you beat your fear and taught others how to do the same?
