  • 1622 Tierra Firma Fleet

    Spanish naval ships of the 1600s and 1700s transported gold and silver from the New World to Spain, taking on cargo from several ports in the Caribbean before sailing in convoys across the Atlantic.

    In 1622, the Tierra Firma fleet, 28 ships in all, left Havana bound for Spain. Eight of the vessels, including the Santa Margarita and the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, sank two days later in a hurricane, along with a fortune in gold, silver, emeralds and pearls. The Spanish tried to recover some of the treasure, but the two ships lay abandoned for more than 350 years. After a 16-year search, Mel Fisher and his treasure hunters discovered them in the 1980s.

    More than one billion dollars in treasure has been recovered from these two wrecks.

  • 1715 Spanish Fleet

    Eleven treasure-laden ships that made up the 1715 Fleet were heading to Spain from Havana on 31 July 1715, when they encountered a hurricane off Florida’s central coast.

    The winds and waves smashed the ships onto reefs, claiming as many as 1,000 lives in one of colonial Spain’s biggest maritime disasters off Florida.

  • 1641 Concepcion Shipwreck

    After being caught in a hurricane off Florida, the Spanish treasure laden galleon Nuestra Señora de la Concepcion drifted for weeks and went aground on October 31, 1641 amidst the reefs north of Hispañola, the present day Dominican Republic.

    For hundreds of years, treasure seekers hunted for her vast silver cargo, but it wasn’t until 1979 that the jealous sea began to give up Concepcion’s “pieces of eight.”
