I’m a leading political commentator on the left and in this lecture I explain some recent trends in US politics, including the rise of right-wing populism, the Bernie Sanders movement on the American left, and discuss the paths that could be taken in a country that is highly polarized and filled with increasing political strife.
As an editor of an independent magazine, I have a front-row seat on recent trends in media, including the collapse of many newspapers, the struggles of news networks, and the explosion of “fake news.” In this lecture, I look at the state of journalism, discussing its funding models (paywalls, advertising, etc.) and the challenges faced by the industry. I also talk about what artificial intelligence is likely to do to media.
This is based on my Harvard PhD dissertation, which was about why young people become “democratic socialists.” I discuss the resurgence of socialism since 2015, why it’s happening, and whether we can expect to see the movement grow.
I have taught several day-long writing workshops and this is a condensed version of them. With a particular focus on nonfiction and political writing, it draws from my decade of experience as a professional writer to give basic tips for how people can write in ways that readers will find compelling.
I have written extensively about artificial intelligence and studied its uses, particularly in the creative arts. This talk is about whether AI poses a threat to art and other creative work. I showcase some of the capacities of AI technology as it exists currently and talk about what it means for human labor. This lecture is good for art and design schools in particular.
