Burnout is defined as physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion as a result of prolonged exposure to stressors. Therefore, it is important to recognize and acknowledge the signs and symptoms of burnout. Empowering Women From Burnout to Balance will teach women how to go from Burnout to Balance by using realistic self-care toolkits tailored to their needs so they can achieve a work-life balance. The socialization of women in our society often means that they have internalized thought patterns that can potentially put them on the path to burnout. Some women feel that they simply do not have the time for self-care, struggle with setting boundaries, or do not feel comfortable putting themselves first.
Attendee Results:
Women will learn how to restructure and reframe negative thought patterns to minimize stress and prevent burnout.
Women will learn effective coping mechanisms and strategies to stay on top of their mental health on a daily basis by processing their emotions, understanding what their emotions are telling them, and piloting those emotions in a healthy way on the path to emotional intelligence and regulation.
Women will walk away with the tools needed to stay on top of their mental health and how to use those tools daily to manage stressors effectively. In addition, they will learn how to maintain a balance between work and their personal lives by setting healthy boundaries.
According to Abraham Maslow's (1943) hierarchy of needs, to self-actualize, the individual must feel like they belong and they are safe in their environment. This means that the society in which they reside informs them that they are welcome and secure. This message communicates to the individual that they can self-actualize and become the person they want to be because their need for safety and belonging is being met. For members of ethnic minority groups, the message they receive from society is vastly different. They are constantly reminded that they do not belong based on their race, ethnicity, skin color, and national origin. This societal rejection creates a hostile environment in the form of racism, discrimination, oppression, and, microaggression which harms the mental health of ethnic minority group members. The interaction with a hostile environment has a negative impact on their mental health resulting in the development of mental health disorders such as stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma.
Attendee Results:
Learn how to be culturally competent and sensitive as part of understanding the experiences of ethnic minority group members so they can meet their respective needs. This cultural competency training can help set the foundation for interprofessional collaborative care specific to the needs of ethnic minority group members and ensure a strengths-based approach by involving them in decisions related to their care.
Effective collaboration with ethnic minority communities and their community leaders to help professionals further understand the unique needs of the community and involve them in the creation of culturally competent mental health practices.
Understand how to create resources with the assistance of community members and leaders to assist with identifying resources that will help to reduce feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety while establishing protective barriers to cope and flourish despite living in a hostile environment.
Cultural competency is the ability to interact with individuals in a way that is respectful of their diverse cultural backgrounds. It involves understanding the way culture shapes the worldview of the individual. It involves appreciating, understanding, and respecting the beliefs of others while being aware of their own prejudices and stereotypes. Cultural competency creates the path for effective cross-cultural communication.
