Dr. Greg Wells Biography

At just 15, training for Canada's National Youth Swim Team in Florida, Dr. Greg Wells encountered a life-altering accident. He suffered severe injuries - multiple broken and dislocated vertebrae in my neck - while bodysurfing before a meet. Despite this, he was determined to swim competitively again.

Thanks to three months in traction, neurosurgery, and the unwavering support of my teammates, coaches, surgeons, and physiotherapists, he not only fully recovered but returned to the pool, racing at the Olympic Trials and during his university years.

Intrigued by the human body and its untapped potential, Dr. Wells pursued a career in kinesiology. He obtained a Bachelor's degree and a Master's and PhD in exercise and respiratory physiology. His knowledge deepened through post-doctoral fellowships in respiratory medicine at Sick Kids Hospital and biomedical engineering at Toronto General Hospital.

Today, as a dedicated scientist and performance physiologist, Dr. Wells channels his career into exploring the extremes of human potential and making complex scientific discoveries comprehensible and actionable. Currently, he serves as a scientist in Translational Medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children, aiming to improve the lives of children with chronic illnesses through physical activity. Dr. Wells is also proud of his academic accomplishments, which include over 60 papers published in scientific journals and more than $1 million raised for research.

Being a passionate science advocate, Dr. Wells enjoys demystifying research and making it approachable and actionable. He's been privileged to share the stage with the likes of Richard Branson, Steve Wozniak, and Deepak Chopra at events like TEDx and The Titan Summit. He has authored five best-selling books, including "Superbodies," "The Ripple Effect," "The Focus Effect," "Rest Refocus Recharge," and his latest, "Powerhouse – Protect Your Energy, Optimize Your Health & Supercharge Your Performance."

His career highlights included hosting the Gemini Award-winning Superbodies series for CTV at the 2010 and 2012 Olympics. As Director of Sport Science for the Canadian Sport Centre, his role allowed him to serve as a physiologist for more than 200 international athletes.

As the CEO and founder of Wells Performance, Dr. Wells aims to improve all aspects of our lives, whether personally or professionally. He has been honored to work with globally recognized individuals and leading organizations like General Electric, BMO, Deloitte, KPMG, BMW, Audi, YPO, and Air Canada. Additionally, he's committed to inspiring the next generation, partnering with school boards and independent schools across the globe.

Looking back, Dr. Wells sees his accident at 15 as an unexpected catalyst that inspired his research and adventures. It serves as a reminder of life's fragility, the importance of health, and the thrill of exploration. Through all his work and experiences, his mission is to encourage others to stretch their boundaries and unlock their full potential.

Based on his book "Rest, Refocus, Recharge," he shares how embracing cycles of work and rest unlocks abilities otherwise blocked by constant stress and pressure.

  • Rest, Refocus, Recharge: Why Slowing Down Helps Us To Speed Up

With so much uncertainty in our world added to pressures to achieve goals and objectives, traditional thinking is that we have to do more, more often, and it has to be done faster.

Unfortunately, the physiology of our brain and body clearly shows that this leads to feeling overwhelmed and burned out. Organizations that use this approach see skyrocketing rates of mental health problems, absenteeism, and languishing teams.

However, elite performers in sports, academics, and business have adopted a different approach. They have discovered that calming the mind and body unlocks abilities that are blocked by stress and pressure.

Based on his ground-breaking book, "Rest Refocus Recharge," Dr. Wells will explain how our brains and bodies are designed to operate in cycles of work and rest and how we can harness the power of both to improve our health, well-being, and performance.

In this session, you will discover how you can leverage the “beta” brainwave state, where you can focus and execute while shifting into the “alpha” brainwave state to facilitate strategizing and learning to help potential clients see a new path forward. Innovators can enter “theta” brainwave states to be more creative and to solve problems. Ultimately, high performers can also develop their ability to enter the zone for peak performance via “gamma” states.

You'll learn how to identify the five different brain states, each with a distinct function, and how to intentionally spark these states to achieve your potential.

Drawing on the latest research in neuroscience and physiology, Dr. Wells will provide a step-by-step guide to optimizing your mental and physical health through strategic rest and recovery for you and your team.

    Audiences will learn:

    • Your brain wasn’t designed to be in constant ‘go mode’
    • Constant work undermines your ability to perform at a high level
    • Calming the mind unlocks learning and strategic thinking
    • Innovation and problem solving only happens when we slow down • a lot
    • Shifting between brain performance states elevates mental health.

This keynote or workshop is based on Dr. Wells’ best-selling book "Rest, Refocus Recharge."
