From infertility to painful sex, women are taught from a young age that the way their bodies are designed to work is something to be ashamed of. This leads to women battling these issues in silence and delaying essential care. Along with that, women, and specifically women of color are more likely to experience medical gaslighting, where their symptoms are dismissed or downplayed as “normal” or psychosomatic.
Through the lens of her 4 year journey to get a diagnosis of endometriosis, a disease that affects 1 in 10 women, and having a hysterectomy at the age of 31, Jenneh shares how her personal experience has led her to dedicating her life to publicly tackling the many taboos that keep women from advocating for themselves.
Life often doesn’t go the way you planned. If there is anyone who knows that to be true, it’s Jenneh Rishe. Whether it was surviving open heart surgery at the age of 33, having to walk away from a job she loved, or struggling with identity and self-worth, Jenneh has been left many times to ask the question: Who do I become, when I’m stripped of everything I think that I am?
Jenneh explores what it looks like to pivot when you need to accept your new normal, reframe your internal narrative, and reorient your life plan to become the person you’re meant to be.
“An individual that identifies as being dynamically disabled, is someone that is able to perform tasks or do activities, for example, in a day, more than once a day, or as sporadically or as often as they can, but the individual may not be able to complete those same tasks or do them at all in the next moment or the next day (week, etc.).”
In this talk, Jenneh shares her personal experiences as someone living with a dynamic disability and how the effects of “invisible illness” contributed to experiencing ableism in many areas of her life. This thought-provoking talk will leave you with a better understanding of dynamic disabilities and how as a culture and individuals, we can all be better allies.
