Born in Mount Vernon, New York, on February 15, 1987, to Vivian and Valerie Blake, Dominique Blake was raised in Kingston, Jamaica, where she received her fundamentals in academics and athletics. She attended St. Peter & Paul Preparatory School and Hillel Academy, both located in Kingston. Throughout her childhood in Jamaica, Dominique was very athletic and always had a love for sport—most of all, running.
She took that passion for sport and made it her focus, from adolescence and into adulthood. Migrating from Jamaica to the States in 1999, Dominique attended high school in the Bronx, New York. At age 13, she became an all-star athlete in track and field. Her coach, Maritza Osorio, immediately realized the youngster's talent and began grooming her to become the best in the nation. Dominique was recruited by every top, Division I university in the country. She earned a full scholarship to Penn State University, where she was also a standout athlete and became an all American, multiple conference champion, national champion, and Penn State record holder.
Dominique won her first gold medal for her home country of Jamaica in 2010, competing at the Central American and Caribbean Games. She continued receiving encouragement from family and her coach to be the very best at whatever she did. Whether it was sports or academics, it was of paramount importance that Dominique was giving her very best effort and also enjoying what she was giving that effort to.
