Kojo Nnamdi Biography

Kojo Nnamdi is the host of "The Kojo Nnamdi Show," a live talk show produced by WAMU 88.5 that airs weekdays at noon. On Fridays at noon, he also hosts "The Politics Hour" on WAMU 88.5.

Described by The Washington Post as "maybe the best radio interviewer in town," Nnamdi engages with a diverse array of guests who discuss a range of topics from current events and political issues to social policy, arts, science, and more. The format of the show encourages active participation from listeners, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas pertinent to the Washington, D.C., region.

Nnamdi, a native of Guyana, migrated to the United States in 1968 to pursue higher education and explore the civil rights movement. His extensive career in broadcasting includes hosting "Evening Exchange," a public affairs television program on WHUT-TV at Howard University from 1985 to 2011, and working at WHUR-FM from 1973 to 1985 as news editor and later as news director. Here, he produced "The Daily Drum," a local news program that garnered numerous accolades.

In recognition of his contributions, Nnamdi has received several honors. He was the keynote speaker for the Library of Congress's African American History Month in 2003, named a civil rights hero by the National Council for Community Justice in 2001, and honored as a "Washingtonian of the Year" by Washingtonian magazine in 2005. In the same year and later in 2007, he was recognized as one of the "150 Most Influential People in Washington" by Washingtonian magazine and named one of "DC’s Most Influential People" by DCist.

Apart from his media roles, Nnamdi has been the chairman of the Public Access Corporation of Washington, D.C., since 1997 and remains active in Guyaid, a charity focused on the welfare of children in Guyana. His tenure on the Board of the Library of Congress American Folklife Center spanned from 2003 to 2008. A proud naturalized American citizen for over two decades, Nnamdi's personal interests include cricket, Caribbean Carnival, poetry, jazz, and jogging. He has been recognized by both the Society of Professional Journalists D.C. chapter’s Hall of Fame in 2014 and the D.C. Hall of Fame Society in 2018, while "The Kojo Nnamdi Show" has received numerous PRNDI, AP honors, and the National Association of Black Broadcasters Salute to Excellence award.
