Dr. Austin Chiang is a gastroenterologist and advanced endoscopist who, in October 2021, became the first Chief Medical Officer of the Endoscopy business for Medtronic, the world’s leading medical device company. His interests include novel endoscopic weight loss treatments as well as complex interventional endoscopic procedures including the diagnosis and treatment of various gastrointestinal conditions and their complications. These include a variety of cancers affecting the gastrointestinal tract such as the pancreas, bile duct, esophagus, stomach, colon, and liver cancers.
Dr. Chiang is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Jefferson Health in Philadelphia, PA, and serves as the Director of the Endoscopic Weight Loss Program. Having trained at the only dedicated bariatric endoscopy program, he is one of few triple board-certified advanced endoscopy-trained physicians in the world. His triple-board certifications include Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and in Obesity Medicine by the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
Passionate about empowering patients with accurate medical information online, Dr. Chiang has over 700,000 followers across social media platforms. He was formerly Chief Medical Social Media Officer of Jefferson Health and founding president of the Association for Healthcare Social Media. In 2021, Dr. Chiang was a nominee for the GLAAD Media TikTok Advocate of the Year award in recognition of using the app to promote inclusivity by inspiring and educating his followers. He sits on the inaugural YouTube Health Advisory Board and, in 2022, joined the White House Healthcare Leaders in Social Media Roundtable. Offline, Dr. Chiang authored “Gut: An Owner’s Guide” to help educate the public about gut health, gastroenterological procedures, and innovation. It was published in 2024.
Dr. Chiang serves on the board of the Association for Bariatric Endoscopy and is a committee member for the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He was named Healio Gastroenterology's Disruptive Innovator of the Year in 2018 and was a Philadelphia Inquirer Influencer of Healthcare Rookie of the Year in 2019.
Dr. Chiang completed his undergraduate degree in biology at Duke University and earned his MD from Columbia University before completing his internal medicine residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He completed his gastroenterology and bariatric endoscopy fellowships at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School and advanced endoscopy fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He is also a graduate of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where he earned his master's degree in public health.
