Robert L. Edmonson II Biography

After completing his bachelor’s degree and earning a commission into the United States Army, Major General (Ret) Robert L. Edmonson II rose to the rank of two-star General. In his final assignment, he served as Commanding General of a global IT enterprise comprised of 9K soldiers, federal civilians and government contractors at 56 locations in 24 states and 20 locations overseas with a financial portfolio of 3.1B. Edmonson is a combat veteran who earned the Bronze Star Medal and also an experienced executive who earned a Master Degree in Information Resource Management, Master Degree in National Security Strategy, as well as the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate. Being adopted into a loving family as a child greatly influenced his leadership-style and combined with a distinguished 33-year military career, he developed a strong passion for servant leadership. Edmonson readily shares his thoughts aimed at unlocking the best in us through the “Essentials of Professional Leadership” and prides himself on the success of others by teaching, coaching and mentoring servant leaders to achieve their dreams - because “You Belong”!

Edmonson augmented relationships with communities, strategically integrating media relations, graphic, and publishing functions into a synergistic organization. This included building partnerships with universities and colleges to advance economic and employment opportunities at Aberdeen Proving Ground, which is the state’s sixth largest employer (twice being recognized by the state as part of the Maryland Power 100 community-conscious employers).

Finally, Edmonson gained national attention when he was featured on ABC World News with Martha Raddatz and the Tamron Hall Show where he shared a remarkably story about being adopted by a US Soldier and his wife in Germany, never knowing that he had two biological half-brothers one of which he served with in the Army, joined the same fraternity, wives were in the same sorority and both were nurses.

Robert L. Edmonson II Speaking Topics

  • Building the Team

One of the best organizations I ever had the pleasure of becoming a member of assembled a team of pentathletes (people who could do more than one thing), each with tremendous character, high standards for themselves and others and a willingness to embrace the art of the possible. Within any organization building healthy teams are foundational to long-term success because healthy teams improve operating efficiency by solving problems at the lowest level, are positioned to adapt to market shifts and healthy teams experience low employee turnover which improves predictability.

  • Born 2 Lead

The thrust of being “Born 2 Lead” is to equip aspiring leaders with my top 3 most proven leadership traits that I routinely saw in successful people who were leading high performing organizations. Being “Born 2 Lead” is available to any lifelong learner who is willing to blossom from where they have been planted. I’ll also dispel the notion that some of our greatest leaders were destined to become Born Leaders. Instead, being “Born 2 Lead” offers that Leadership is Deliberate (the inward facing you), Leadership is Demanding (the outward facing you) and finally Leadership is Lasting (has generational impacts). Based upon 33 years in continuous leadership positions I’ll offer the audience a behind-the-scenes perspective of why the best leaders are “Born 2 Lead”.

  • Ethical Decision Making: Leadership Isn't Easy----and it Shouldn't be Either

All too often I became witness to hearing stories about aspiring blue-chip leader's fall from grace. While most high performing organizations already run developmental programs aimed at teaching you how to be successful within the company, not enough teach you how to handle that success. Like it or not, successful people live under a microscope or in a fishbowl where their daily behavior is closely observed and/or scrutinized in ways that require periodic alignments (like a car) to remain on the road to success. Let's talk about choosing the hard right over the easy wrong!

  • Climbing the Ladder

It's often said, there's no such thing as luck. And when it comes to climbing the professional ladder I couldn't agree more. In climbing the ladder I'll describe what "your role" is and is not and how you rarely get a second chance to make a good first impression. I'll also share my most sought-after personal traits which I observed in other people during my 30+ years in leadership positions. Let's take the mystery out of promotions.

  • The Leaders Triad

Placing emphasis on your Mental, Physical and Emotional wellbeing are necessary steps to achieve professional heights. Leadership is not a sprint, it's a marathon that includes much more than hard work alone.

    • Mental: education, self-development, volunteering, work-life balance
    • Physical: exercise, diet, sleep and routine check ups
    • Emotional: family, confidants, vulnerability, ethical behavior
