The Buffalo, or the American Bison for those keeping score, is an amazing animal. When a brutal storm begins to form over the horizon, the American bison grabs up it's herd, takes a few bites of whats lying around, and heads straight into the storm. What a leadership lesson. In this life, we are in three constant stages. We are either heading into a storm, we are in a storm, or we are coming out of a storm. What makes our businesses, relationships, and ourselves thrive in these storms is how well we prepare for and operate within these storms. The first framework that I cover in this session is about having G.R.I.T.
G: Growth... In order to thrive in any storm, you have to have growth in mind. Even in the toughest of storms, there is an opportunity to grow as individuals, teams, and entire organizations.
R: Resilience... The Buffalo has amazingly thick skin that helps it survive and thrive in any storm. We, as leaders, must have that same thickness in our skin. Not only for ourselves, but for our people!
I: Integrity... People want to work with and be around people of integrity. Without integrity, our teams and individuals won't last long, and once integrity is broken, it's almost impossible to get back. We have to be people and teams of integrity.
T: Transformation... In order to get through the storms of change, we have to be people with transformation in mind. How are we different? How are we changing the game? How are we transforming as individuals?
No matter what happens in our lives, we will, eventually, fail. In this session, I talk about one of the biggest failures of my life. As a Marine Corps leader, the stakes are often times life and death. In Afghanistan, I led in a way that could very well have cost the lives of my men. I failed to lead them after the loss of a very close friend and fellow Marine to an IED attack. This session will talk through how to turn failure into success and how to recover from failing. Here are the specifics.
1) We have to learn and accept our part in failure through taking not only responsibility but ownership in the failure. This is the foundation for recovery.
2) We have to relive the experience and figure out where we went wrong.
3) We have to write down the 3Ws. What went well, What went wrong, and what will we do next time.
4) We have to act. We may not be able to make things better after failure, but we have to try.
5) We have to learn from it. There are amazing things that we can learn from failing. We just have to open our eyes to what lessons can come from it.
People will walk away from this session empowered to try! Empowered to fail! And Empowered to succeed after failure!
Technological advancements are happening at rapid rates. Everyday there are new widgets, AI platforms, solutions to computer problems, and new code to be written. But how do you lead PEOPLE in this industry toward success and scale?
Innovation leadership is a leadership style that embraces innovation and people skills, providing a space for people to be creative. This is a leadership style that changes the world, but it can be counterintuitive to alot of leaders. Transformational Leadership Theory is a great way to get this done, but you have to do it right. Here are the tenets of how to lead transformatively.
1) Individual Consideration: Know your people and how they want to be led
2) Idealized Influence: Your people are watching you. How are you acting as a leader?
3) Intellectual Stimulation: Are you challenging your people intellectually?
4) Inspirational Motivation: Are you motivating your team in a way that motivates them? How well do you know them and are you moving from motivation to discipline
