Dr. Alice Hammel Speaking Topics

  • Neurodiversity in the Workplace

Fifteen to twenty percent of the US workforce has been identified as being neurodiverse. This means their brains are literally hardwired differently. They will always think and act differently from those who are neurotypical in the way they think and create. Most workers who are neurodivergent possess high levels of creativity and can contribute many ‘out of the box’ ideas that are not possible when your workplace includes only those with neurotypical brains. There are some best practice ideas based on research that can teach us how to optimize a robust relationship between all workers and to respect the inherent differences in some workers. Neurodiversity is not limited to our workforce. Dr. Alice Hammel speaks to the fact that we must also consider our client base, the ever-widening transparency regarding disabilities, and ways we can gain and retain clients, employees, and projects through our interactions with neurodivergent workers, leaders, and creatives.

  • “Nothing About Us Without Us”

So often, those with disabilities are not included in projects, thought leader meetings, community meetings, or conversations surrounding differences and disabilities. One of the Disability Rights Statements is: Nothing About Us Without Us. How can we be more inclusive in the ways we include the primary stakeholders in our programs, written communication, conferences, and everyday lives in the work place? How do we adapt our settings for those with disabilities and how do we do so without ‘othering’ them? Including employees, clients, and experts who live with disabilities is very important. We can improve our relationships with all involved and build stronger companies, corporations, and non-profits through including those most affected as we plan, implement, and reflect on our projects, work spaces, and schedules. Dr. Alice Hammel speaks to how with these in place, we demonstrate to future employees, clients, and the perceived inclusive value of our organizations.

  • Teaching Music to Students with Differences and Disabilities: A Label-Free Approach

Labels are currently endemic and over-used in the United States; other parts of the world -- Europe in particular -- have moved from the medical model (labeling everything) to a social model (creating spaces and conditions for everyone without a need for labels) and have seen growth in industry as well as employee and client satisfaction. Through creating projects, curating events, and speaking through a domain, rather than a label approach, we are respecting the personhood and dignity of everyone we come in contact with during our business and social events and lives. Dr. Alice Hammel speaks on how when we learn to make these small changes, we can see a large increase in revenue, client satisfaction, and employee retention.

  • The Effect of Poverty in Music Programs in Rural Settings

Poverty in rural areas can have a devastating effect on the ability of music programs to exist, have the resources and numbers of students to create meaningful music, and challenge families by the distances between schools and the family and community resources necessary to create musical experiences. We are sometimes focused on poverty in urban settings; however, rural settings experience varied and different challenges. Dr. Alice Hammer discusses how we can begin to provide some equity for students who live in poverty in rural areas.
