Spencer Christian Biography

Spencer Christian joined the ABC7 News team in January 1999, as a weather forecaster for the weeknight newscasts at 5, 6, and 11 p.m. He moved to ABC7 after nearly 13 years with Good Morning America — based in New York — where he provided national weather reports and covered a wide array of topics from current events to human interest stories. Prior to joining ABC7, Christian's career in New York spanned 22 years, including his time at Good Morning America and nine years at WABC-TV. At WABC-TV, he served as a weatherman and sportscaster from 1977 to 1986 and briefly hosted Good Morning New York.

Before his prominent roles in New York, Christian was a weathercaster in Baltimore from 1975-1977, where he hosted Spencer's World, a weekly half-hour talk show. He began his television career in 1971 in Richmond, Virginia, as a news reporter, covering various significant topics including state and local politics, the public school system, and landmark cases in the Fourth US Circuit Court of Appeals. His early career achievements include winning the Better Life Award for his investigative reports on abuses in Virginia's nursing homes.

Christian is a veteran of the US Army Reserves and holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English with a minor in journalism from Hampton University. Following his military service, he taught English at the Stony Brook School in Long Island, New York, for a year before fully launching his television career. A native of Charles City, Virginia, he was inducted into the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame in April 1993 and was named Virginian of the Year by the Virginia Press Association in July 1993.

Apart from his work in television, Christian is actively engaged in various charitable and community-service organizations, including the March of Dimes, Special Olympics, the American Cancer Society, Big Brothers, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, the United Negro College Fund, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He has also worked with Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter on Habitat for Humanity projects and served as the emcee for former President Carter's 75th birthday celebration in October 1999.

An author and an advocate for children's literacy, Christian has written a series of children's books titled "Can It Really Rain Frogs?", "Shake, Rattle, and Roll", "What Makes the Grand Canyon Grand?", and "Is There a Dinosaur in Your Backyard?". He continues to focus on education and literacy as significant concerns. Additionally, Christian is a passionate wine enthusiast and collector, having once maintained a private collection of over 1,600 bottles of fine wine. From January 1995 to December 1999, he hosted "Spencer Christian's Wine Cellar" on HGTV and the TV Food Network. He remains actively involved in exploring and promoting the wine culture, especially in California's wine regions.
