Lisa Caputo currently serves as the Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for The Travelers Companies, Inc., a role she has held since 2011. In this capacity, she oversees the company’s comprehensive marketing, research, branding, corporate communications, and creative services strategies and operations. Caputo has been instrumental in launching the Travelers Risk Index and positioning the company as a thought leader on various issues including the U.S. fiscal crisis, education, and risk management.
Prior to joining Travelers, Caputo held various senior leadership roles at Citigroup from 2000 to 2011. She was the company’s first global corporate Chief Marketing Officer and served as Executive Vice President of Global Marketing and Corporate Affairs. During her tenure, she founded Women & Co., Citigroup's financial services business for women, and served as its Chairman and CEO, managing over $37 billion in assets. Caputo also led key initiatives including the rebranding of Citigroup to Citi, the negotiation of naming rights and business partnership with the New York Mets, and the branding of CitiField stadium. Additionally, she crafted a reputational risk radar system and developed a "war room" during the financial crisis.
Caputo's earlier career includes senior communications roles at both Disney Publishing Worldwide and CBS Corporation, where she served as Vice President of Global Communications and Synergy, and Vice President of Corporate Communications, respectively. Her political experience is marked by her roles as Deputy Assistant to President Bill Clinton and Press Secretary to First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton during President Clinton’s first term. She also served as a Senior Adviser during Hillary Clinton's 2008 and 2016 Presidential Campaigns.
She graduated magna cum laude from Brown University, where she also played field hockey and lacrosse. Caputo later earned a Master’s degree in Journalism with highest distinction from Northwestern University. Her accolades include the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award in 2011, recognizing her as a distinguished individual on the 25th anniversary of her collegiate athletic career.
In addition to her professional responsibilities, Caputo serves on several influential boards including Best Buy Co., Inc., the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, and WNET Channel 13. She was appointed by President Obama to the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board in 2010 and is a member of both the Council on Foreign Relations and the Economic Club of New York.
