Kathy Bates Biography

Kathy Bates, an Academy Award-winning actress, is renowned for her versatile roles in film, television, and theater. Bates rose to fame with her portrayal of Annie Wilkes in the 1990 film "Misery," earning her the Oscar for Best Actress. Her ability to seamlessly embody both dramatic and comedic characters has made her one of Hollywood's most respected performers.

Bates is the recipient of multiple Primetime Emmy Awards, including for her role as Delphine LaLaurie in "American Horror Story: Coven," and for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for the ninth season of "Two and a Half Men." She has also won two Golden Globes and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. Throughout her career, she has garnered four Oscar nominations for her performances in "Primary Colors," "About Schmidt," and "Misery," and has earned 14 Emmy nominations. Bates' television directing credits include episodes of "Six Feet Under" and "NYPD Blue." Onstage, she garnered a Tony Award nomination for "'night, Mother," and won an Obie Award for her role in "Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune." She was recognized for her television roles in programs such as "The Office" and the "American Horror Story" anthology series, among others.

In addition to her acting career, Bates focuses on her advocacy work, particularly raising awareness for lymphedema, a condition she has dealt with as a cancer survivor. In 2017, she was awarded the “Isadore Rosenfeld Award for Impact on Public Opinion” by Research! America for her advocacy work. Bates uses her platform to promote cancer awareness and encourages early diagnosis and treatment, engaging audiences with her frank and funny style. She aims to help women stay healthy through greater awareness and treatment options. Bates announced she would retire from acting following the release of the CBS series "Matlock," a reboot of the Andy Griffith legal procedural, marking the end of a career spanning six decades. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her work in the film industry in 2016.
