Moscow-born Anna Sergeyevna Kournikova emerged as one of the most recognizable names in tennis during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The daughter of athletic parents -— her father was a former Greco-Roman wrestling champion, her mother, a 400-meter runner -— Kournikova started playing tennis at the age of five. By 10, the Russian youngster moved to Bradenton, Florida, to train at Nick Bollettieri's prestigious tennis academy, laying the groundwork for her professional career.

Kournikova turned pro in 1995 at the age of 14 and quickly rose to prominence. Her breakthrough came in 1997 when she reached the semifinals of Wimbledon at just 16, a feat that captured global attention. Though she never won a singles title, she reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 8 in 2000. Kournikova excelled in doubles, winning 16 titles, including two Australian Open championships in 1999 and 2002 with partner Martina Hingis, and achieving the World No. 1 doubles ranking in 1999.
