Brendan Carr

Brendan G. Carr, MD, MS, is the CEO of Mount Sinai Health System, which includes eight hospitals, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and over 400 ambulatory locations and physician practices. Dr. Carr has practiced clinical emergency medicine for more than 20 years and is a renowned clinician and health policy researcher who has built regional systems of emergency care and advised domestic and international organizations.

A member of the National Academy of Medicine, Dr. Carr previously served on the faculty at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and as associate dean of the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. Earlier, he held roles in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services focused on improving trauma and emergency care delivery for the nation, ensuring its ability to respond during large-scale threats to public health.

Dr. Carr earned his medical degree from the Temple University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also pursued fellowships in trauma and surgical critical care, as well as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar’s Program. Dr. Carr has held faculty positions in emergency medicine, surgery, and epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson University Health System. At Thomas Jefferson, he served as a professor and associate dean for Healthcare Delivery Innovation, contributing significantly to advancements in medical education and healthcare practices.

He holds master’s degrees in clinical psychology and health policy research and has secured research funding from prestigious institutions such as the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and various foundations. His research specializes in systems of care for trauma, stroke, cardiac arrest, and sepsis. An accomplished author, Dr. Carr has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and has been honored with awards for both his teaching and research. Additionally, he has provided expert advice and support to global non-profit foundations, the World Health Organization, and the National Academy of Medicine.

In 2020, Dr. Carr was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). Election to the NAM is considered one of the highest honors in health and medicine, recognizing individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.
