Bronco Mendenhall Biography
Bronco Mendenhall is the head football coach at the University of New Mexico. Mendenhall is best known for successful stints as a head coach at Brigham Young University and the University of Virginia. In college, Mendenhall was a defensive back at Snow College and Oregon State, but decided to pursue a coaching career following his graduation in 1987.
Mendenhall received his first coaching job in 1989 as a graduate assistant with Oregon State, and would serve various positions around the country with many schools, including Northern Arizona, Snow College, and New Mexico. In 2002, Mendenhall was promoted to associate head coach and defensive coordinator at New Mexico, garnering enough success to be named the head coach at Brigham Young University in 2005 after serving as the team’s defensive coordinator for one season. With BYU, Mendenhall led the Cougars to ten winning seasons in 11 years as coach. He compiled a 99-43 record and won six bowl games at BYU. In just six seasons at UVA, he finished with the second-most wins in program history.
