Carl Bildt

The former Swedish Prime Minister, Carl Bildt, served from 1991 to 1994 and is currently the UN Special Envoy for the Balkans and Chairman of Sweden’s opposition party, the Moderate Party. In addition to his political roles, he has been significantly involved in peace negotiations in the Balkans, leveraging his extensive experience in East and West Europe to influence discussions about the future of the region.

Bildt was elected Prime Minister in 1991 and led a government in coalition with three other non-socialist parties. He held this position until 1994 and then became the Leader of the Opposition, a role he continues to fulfill. His political career started earlier when he was elected a Member of Parliament in 1979. Throughout his political journey, he has maintained a position on the Executive Committee of the Moderate Party and, since 1986, has served as its Chairman. His commitment to international relations is further evidenced by his roles, including a term as a Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and as a member of the Royal Advisory Council on Foreign Affairs since 1982.

In June 1995, Bildt became the European Union’s Special Representative for former Yugoslavia and Co-chairman of the International Conference on the former Yugoslavia. At the Peace Implementation Conference, he was appointed High Representative by the international community, tasked with implementing the civilian parts of the Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He also authored the book "Peace Journey: The Struggle for Peace in Bosnia," which offers insights into the complexities of peace processes.
